Maybe the boost is running out of control and/or the timing is advanced?

Do you have a mechanical aftermarket boost gauge? Have you upgraded your fuel delivery system from the stock setup?

Tach flutter = ignition problem.

Something is still fishy with the ignition.
I'd double check the plugs, make sure you didn't break the porcelain on any of 'em, make sure the wires are seated correctly, none of them are burned, and that your gap is tight enough.

well, the truck is all stock. i checked everything bdubb said and everything looks good. the only thing i can see is that inside the distributor looks a little rusty. i sprayed some carb cleaner around the motor and found the rpm's to rise if i spray it around the pcv area. i have checked all around there and can't seem to find anything out of order. there are times the truck will idle just fine and there are times it idles rough.

update, replaced the fuel filter and seemed to solve my problems. i still get some knock at shift points and rough idle at times. still working on the vacuum lines. also i might need to have injectors cleaned. whats your thoughts tooky?

Tach gets its signal from the ignition module in the distributor. Module gets its signal from the pickup coil also in the distributor. Check the wires plugged into the module under the cap. Try cleaning the contacts. You may need a new module. You can take the module to NAPA or similar autoparts store and they can test it for you.
