Re: Sy 678

Super small update- Was able to lift the engine a good bit and access the oil pan. Had to drop the oil pan. I ordered a new timing cover and things progressively snowballed from there. used the balancer puller the wrong way, bugged up the threads- had to re tap it. I was replacing my old timing cover which the indicator had snapped off. I had doubts about it being accurate as I tack welded it back on. Removed the fasteners and had no clue what I was doing and tore the lower oil pan gasket.
Was a real fun time getting it all out.

New timing cover I put on, Thanks ZSKI Looks good!

The down pipe was a project I got into. I had a friend who was bending and was able to get some material. Rpm I got the flanges. The pipe off the turbo is close to that design.I changed it after I finished it. I had a buddy end mill a angle for me I could not get the 50* transition to merge wastegate in my abrasive chop saw. After having a set design I cut it apart and added a 1 5/8 flex coupler. I. Used all stainless v bands and it splits in 3 pieces for easey install and removing.

I did have trouble on the welding as I bought a new welder which was scratch start.I am used to the pedal and used a scratch start 1x prior.I was able to do a ok job for me but consumers are set up for quality. I was making a fixture but since stoped .

It was just a first time thing for me, purchased a new miller tig welder 150str and it was hard for me to extinguish the arc properly. I have yet to learn how to end aweld pool correctly with a scratch start welder

Changed it

Re: Sy 678

Lately I have not been working on truck. I rarely even open the garage door.

I was able to get some time in with the truck and get a plan. After much trouble of this way, that way which way, NO way.. I finally got the valve covers on nice and snug. Real tight fit like I mention before..

I performed some port work to my one manifold and cleaned up some of the casting marks and edges, Just did a quick run around with a carbide tip burr thing.. I forgot the manifold at my dads house for the past month. finally got that back and just put a few bolts to hold it in place.

Finally got my water pump pulley on, used the ARP metric stuff for this one.

Yesterday I spend some time dissassemble my turbocharger. I am looking for some one who can rebuild them. I have raised speculation it may have a weak oil seal. I would like the turbo to be examined and looked over. PTE gives a song and a dance these days and try pushing off new turbo chargers. Havent put much time into looking for some one who can handle a rebuild. I have the turbo apart now.

Re: Sy 678

Turbo down as far as I could get it. I wanted to remove the back exhaust housing but I dont know how it comes off and do not need to bust the housing. I dont know if it is press fit or tight too but I just left it. The hot side was actually coated with a coating and you can see it rusted out. Some one was actually asking me what happned to it...

Was able to use some other pack of ARP fastners (theres been many) After disassemble the turbo I figure I might be able to use them some where and was.. I just had to wack them down carefully. My plan is to just use them up and make things look better

Than I decided to start scuffing my turbo housing down and cutting into some of the casting and smothing it out for a polished look. We will see how it tuns out.

For now thats all, Still a few loose ends I need to tighten up on the truck. (hard to find parts :rotf:)

Re: Sy 678

Finally was able to find a positive side power cable so I can start putting the engine bay back . Cable is in near perfect condition. I did clean it up with some crc cleaner. Was able to lay it out and inspect both.

The cable was in bad shape.. glad I was able to find and mend this issue. Like mention before I felt as if this would have lit my truck on fire. The way the copper wire strands are blown apart and melted @ the ends.. It made some good contact at some point. It had to be fixed. I pulled parts off a cooked GMC syclone and I know why it light on fire.

Also started rebuilding/refurbishing the throttle body. Old one was bad. Time to start buttoning up engine bay and move on to the next things/faze..

Re: Sy 678

Last time I worked on my truck Discovered everything was going wrong. Packed it all in and moved the truck to another location. aside from getting the correct power cable I was lucky to have some one help me out with the 4x4 adapter. My original was half gone. Looked like this

Since I was able to get a new one I bead blasted it and cleaned it up. Decided to do new hardware- with high hopes the stuff wont snap or shear off the time.

Got my Cross member set up/new mount/ and the adapter ready to go on. I also picked up a trans manual another board member recommend and I decided to buy the book and thumb through it and get to know the trans..

There is a bunch of other stuff but for right now I decided to get a better perspective on things in relation to the transmission.

Be care full with those arp bolts, most are std thread as well as std size 12 point heads the ones that appear to be 10mm are really 3/8ths, they make both metric and std. just be sure.

Re: Sy 678

Thanks for the heads up. I measured up everything and have thread pitch indicators to determine if I am standard or metric / coarse or fine

The ARP bolts are M10 x 1.50 . I used 30 mm like the ones originally inside that snapped off. I used a depth gauge to figure the correct length.

What I did was buy the M 10 stuff and clean the threads on the adapter and re tapped the mount to M10 as well.

Re: Sy 678

Today I was able to get some time and start to break down the Original trans. I snapped a few pictures as I went along.

Since I purchased the ATSG book I have been reading up. Decided it was time to open it up and start the rip down. ( all started when my brother asked me whats going on with my truck its been the same way for atleast 2 years now...) Sort of lit a fire under me so I just decided to make some more progress.

Original trans to the truck..

Here is a good example of all the oil that was blowing out from some where saturating the case, frame and underside of the truck. This is what the trans looked like when I pulled it mons ago.. this is one of the reasons why I needed to address things. The oil issue was beyond my comprehension after a fresh rebuild.

So This picture is looking at my magnet which happened to be cleaned not many miles prior. Clearly showing there is a issue?

Got the valve body off

Pump loose than out... and I stopped there. Forgot my book and decided to start fresh once I update my knowledge. A buddy swung by and said I cant believe you got that far. He was watching me move things around and think about a plan and if/how I was going to start to crack it open. He must of thought I was kidding I left off getting the pump out and looking down in to the mouth of the beast.. Hopefully I can stay on track and keep my motivation and silence some peoples interest in the trucks current stage.

Re: Sy 678

I just got the transmission completely ripped down. I had a few obstacles but I took a break and hit it hard for another round and just like that bish , bash, boom its done.

From what I can see things inside do not look so good. I see a high heat or extreme heat condition. The 2-4 band which I was told was probably the issue.. Just looks worn thin. Don't have a new one to compare against but it looks thin.

Poped out a few of these clutch packs flipped them over and spread them out like I was a magician doing a trick.. The parts were burnt looking and the steels show signs of high heat as well.

I will have some photos of this extreme heat condition later.

Re: Sy 678

Just uploaded some of the internal photos of the trans.

This was the 2-4 band. Only thing I can see is it appears to have a thin layer and could be worn down

This looked to be original to the truck

This part looked like it had seen some serious heat.. by the blue and gold coloring

And here is a set of the steels and friction plates which look heated as well.

Re: Sy 678

Closely check you input drum and forward clutch piston (part 630 on page 105 of manual). The input drum can develop cracks at the bottom (kind of hard to see in my picture), and my forward clutch piston was also cracked. A common upgrade to the input drum is a steel reinforcing sleeve installed where mine is cracked.

Re: Sy 678

The good old days.

Going through AWD-TURBO-TRUCK withdraw. Was able to recover this picture from my dads phone a while ago and had it ever since. That is me and my dad. Was when the truck was in its glory days about 3 years ago.

Picture was taken by guy that lived close by. He did body work. Was Always around he saw a couple project vehicles in primer and was like a fly on shit.. He always wanted to take pictures of me with my vehicles and other older vehicles. I had a mega blow out with him one day he was scraping shit off my truck. Literally bird shit with his fingernail. Being a body guy I thought he would have known better. I asked him if he would do that at a show or to a show vehicle because that's how I treat my stuff. I actually think the photo was taken that day he scraped the shit off. We never really spoke again. I never did shit to my truck again except cover it and keep it out of sight. Cover blew off in some strong winds today/yesterday so I got to see the truck today and wanted to drive it. Too bad I got 2 broken trucks right now! And remember even the birds will shit on you.
