Re: SY 2373 Ramblings

Are you just running a Walbro 255 for your fuel delivery? I'm wondering how much power I can make with mine before I run out of fuel.

Also Whats the latest after the cylinder was low on compression? Have you had to pull the heads, or you just need to periodically clean the engine?

Yes, just a Walbro 255. I have put down 420 hp and 544 tq at all four wheels so far, so you should be ok unless you are running serious power. There was a good article in the month's Hot Rod about fuel pump sizes, BTW. Cylinder with low compression came up to 152 psi after the water treatment. All cylinders are within 95% or so of each other. I did not have to pull the heads.

Re: SY 2373 Ramblings

I've got almost everything together for my rear disc brake swap, just waiting on the e-brake bracket and brake lines from Renz. I will probably do this swap when I pull the trans for a rebuild.

Glad to hear you didnt have to pull the heads! The walbro should work for me for a while then. I also need to do the rear brake swap soon. Take pictures of the trans build and rear brake swap if you can! Thanks for the help.

Re: SY 2373 Ramblings

I started with a glass cleaner sprayer, and then ended with a small pump up handheld sprayer. I would just spray a little water into the throttle body until the truck stumbled a little, then let the truck recover, then repeat.

Don't be afraid to get a little more aggressive with it. I have done it with the brake booster line off sucking up a jug of water. IIRC I did a gallon in about 3-4 minutes and I know guys who have literally shoved the booster line into a can of seafoam with no bad results. One hand on the throttle keeping the engine rpms up and goosing it a little if the truck threatens to stall. Don't us a water bottle though, I attempted that one time and because the vacuum line on the booster is about the size of the bottle opening it collapsed the bottle sucking in 3/4 of the bottle before I could react. No damage to the engine and it just kept on running. Don't forget to get the engine HOT before doing this, the hotter the better.

Caution, the first attempt was in my garage and the black stains on the garage door behind the pipes were impossible to remove!

Re: SY 2373 Ramblings

Well, I plucked the trans today. It took a little over two hours once a couple of buddies came to help. The transfer case would have been a real MF by myself. I will take it to the trans shop tomorrow to get it broke down so I can send the output shaft out to get cryo treated. The rebuild parts should be here at the end of the week.

Still on the lift, but at least I found out today that the TC did not have any metal passed through it. This was verified by cutting open the filter that I installed before the trans cooler.

Nice and clean now. Pretty easy to clean with a lift and pressure washer. Not perfect, but good.

Re: SY 2373 Ramblings

The truck is still on the lift. I am doing the rear disc swap while the trans is being rebuilt.

I did confirm that the truck is not rusted out ( I put the seam sealer on the opening for the shifter bracket)

Looks good:

Ready for rear disc swap soon:

Re: SY 2373 Ramblings

I am still waiting on my output shaft to come back from cryo treating, but in the meantime:

I had some brake lines made for my rear LS disc swap. The cost was $57. I didn't feel like messing with the stock steel lines and the fittings that were needed:

I did start on removing my old drum brake setup:

I was looking at an easy way to cut off the anchor pin section of the axle flange, then I thought to myself: Self, don't we have a lift, trans jack, and cutting torch? Yes we do.

So, I just pulled the whole thing to make cutting and grinding easier:

After a little work with the torch, and some grinding:

The backing pads fit nice now, after drilling a major pain in the ass two holes. Now to just clean up the rear end and paint it.

Re: SY 2373 Ramblings

Just for future reference, the length of the braided steel brake line needed on the passenger side was 36", and the driver's side was 23". These fit nice with the calipers mounted facing the rear of the truck in order to use the e-brake. These measurements are from end of fitting to end of fitting. An inch or so either way should not hurt.

The carbon wouldn't build up on you Randy if you weren't scared to lean into every once and awhile ;)

Keep at it! How's the trans rebuild coming along?

Turns out, the input drum was cracked pretty bad, as was the forward apply piston. The new kit includes a reinforcement for the input drum, which I had to replace. Things are creeping along slowly on the trans rebuild. My trans guy friend spend about an hour hand filing the legs on the sun shell and reverse drum to make sure that they meshed together just right.

Re: SY 2373 Ramblings

After three long days at the trans shop working with my trans buddy, I brought the trans home yesterday. I think it has just about everything done to it that you can do to a 700r4/4l60. I just put the trans back in the truck, and I will button it up tomorrow and take it for a spin. We will see how long it lasts. My buddy swears it is good for 700 HP.
