Surging Idle

I have a few other posts on here, but separating the different problems. My idle seems to be surging up and down quite a bit and has even died just sitting in the driveway. I am using an STG 50# chip setup with controller in glovebox.

Any suggestions or ideas where to go with this problem?

Re: Surging Idle

Vacuum lines for sure. Mine was doing it bad, so I replaced the vacuum lines and it fixed most of it. It only does it on a cold start now. Once warmed up and I start it, it idles perfect.

Re: Surging Idle

I think that's what is causing mine on a cold start because last time I did a tuneup I found out my distributor is off like 3 teeth.....I didn't do it, previous owner

I had such a hard time with cold starts before I set my timing. Set it and now it fires right up and idles smooth.

Re: Surging Idle

OK, how do I set or check the timing? Don't say I need a timing light. I sold that when I got rid of the 5.0 years ago! Didn't think I would need one again.

Re: Surging Idle

You first have to remove the computer advance. tan wire behind carpet in passanger foot area. It will have a black connector on it. with the engine off unplug it. Start truck. it should be at 0*. check with timming light. I would do a TDC check because sometimes they are off. shut off truck, reconnect wire. clear computer. pull fuses for 30 seconds. put fuses back and go.

Not for me. I would have to pull my distributor. Reset it in after finding TDC. Pray for a minute, then hook everything back up. Pray for another minute. Then try to start it and put a gun on it. :rotf:
