Supra owner (not a troll!)

Hiya,

I'm MerF, from Northeast Virginia. Just wanted to say hello and see how the forum operates and start looking through the classifieds for my next truck. :) I have tuned my '94 supra from barely running to a decently quick car on stock fuel and a medium sized single turbo (PT-57, which is a 60-1 trim).

The Supra was fun as hell, but it's expensive as hell. I'm not being naive in saying that a 13 year old truck is going to have no maintenance, but the car payment + insurance + enormous maintenance I performed on this car made it WAY past how much I want to spend a year on it...ok, I'll re-phrase that, more than my WIFE wants me to spend a year. ;)

So the Supra is for sale and I'm looking to convince the wifey to let me stay with a turbocharged vehicle (I can't possibly go back to n/a now!) and appease her by getting a p/u truck (not like I would EVER haul anything in a Syclone, but does she have to know this?). So now I'll be whispering around every once in a while and hopefully I can get a truck and become a bonafide member.

Look forward to any questions or INTERESTS in my car, I am far from new to forums, and I know how things roll. I have a great sense of humor and I can take some flaming without getting angry, so don't worry abotu dancing around a bush with me!

Looks like a nice supra, how about some more info on it, asking price, mods etc etc

welcome to the boards, a very small community, but a lot of info here.

Does it have to be a Syclone?
Not necessarily, I'm looking at Typhoons, too. I might even have a better chance convincing the wife if I can tell her that we can fit the whole family in the truck on cruises and what-not. 8)

sy112, I'll do that in a few minutes, I'll copy my thread form my home-state forum (dragva.com) since it's all written down already. :)

Re: Supra owner (not a troll!)

If your looking for something more reliable than your Supra, look elsewhere. Do a quick search on this topic, so if you do buy a Sy you know what your getting into. Sy are a complete different vehicle vs a Supra, low reving, quick off the line and low end, slow on the highway. Its still fun to drive though.

Ironically the guy who tuned the best comercially available chip for SyTy's(ultimate) is bashing our trucks. Seriously, it can be a love/hate relationship.

Like I said, I am FAR from naive about what I'm wanting to get into. The fact of the matter is, according to eBay, the best condition Syclone was worth $16k...that is a full $9k less than what I am paying now. Not to mention the insurance differences. I'm looking more at one on eBay right now that is in pretty rough shape (looks like it was used as an actual p/u truck than a collectible!!) for aroun $6k or $9k, can't remember. I could do $200/month upgrades to a Syty and STILL be paying less monthly than I do my Supra. My Supra was very reliable, but the maintenance I do on it (I kinda baby it) takes enough $$, not to mention the mods I have done require more mods to kepp up, etc...so it's not like I want a vehicle that never has a problem, if I did I'd just buy a newer truck with a warranty, or Camaro, or a bike even. I want one because I can actual afford to have fun with it, baby it, and upgrade it. :D

We are looking into getting another supra and i happen to have a typhoon for sale. Maybe we could work out a partial trade or something? Click the link in my sig to see the pics. Is it auto or manual?

Be careful about insurance. With AAA, I'm paying $300 more per year on the Sy than on my S-10, because it's considered a performance vehicle. Cheap insurance may have it covered as a regular S-truck. Then when it gets totalled, they give you $3000 for your 13 year old Sonoma... Insurance sucks, but it would suck a lot worse to get screwed out of replacement money because you skimped on premiums.

FYI, smeagol = Brian Green = Ultimate chip. He can be a bit dramatic at times =) but he's full of SyTy wisdom.

I'm not sure if the other forum will let you view this thread without registering, but here's the link. The car is VERY well known in the Hampton Roads area of VA Beach...I got dozens of bumps on that forum just from people who know me and were telling me not to sell the car after all teh work getting it running right, lol...
http://www.dragva.com/forums/showthread.php?t=49646

Anyway, here's the thread I made there with the info:

That's right ladies and germs, it's getting close to that time to sell the Poopra. Originally it was being sold to a friend who has officially backed out, so now I must look to the general public for a buyer. I'm not too enthusiastic to sell it on DragVA, but over the course of the last several months, many people have told me, "Dude, if you evre sell that car, you gotta tell me!"....yeah ok...well, here's your notice.

Wanna know what it looks like, do a search in eye-candy for MerF...it's all over the damn place (and in my sig).

general details:
* 1994 Toyota Supra TT, black targa, 6-speed
* Tan leather interior
* 92k miles (78k 6 months ago...there's a LOT of highway driving going on, almost ALL of it on very low boost).
* Skyline FMIC (custom piping)
* HKS SSQ BOV
* Performance Technologies (PT-57) turbo (60-1 turbo with slightly smaller compressor)
* open external WG (Innovative Progate)
* RPS Stage 2 clutch
* 3-inch exhaust from the turbo back (Apex N-1 cat-back)
* chromes stock rims, rear rims stretched to 10-inches, with 275/40ZR17 tires on rear, BRAND NEW.
* Blitz turbo timer
* GReddy ProfecB spec2 EBC
* Viper alarm

Car has immaculate paint, new targa top (heh-heh), great interior condition (some lights on climate control burned out), very nice/clean Pioneer head-unit WITH CAR.

It's going on sale for $25,000 FIRM...don't even bother haggling, I can't afford to go lower thanks to the fact I just bought the damn thing...but family life says no more 450 RWHP supercar for me...so it's gotta go.

Any questions, post 'em. Or e-mail merfVA@yahoo.com

Lata'.

I have a MKIV that is getting a single turbo, BL tranny. AEM is in, with stock fuel, stock IC, etc.

Anyways, comparing a syty to a Supra... only similarity they have is they are both gasoline powered automobiles. You may dig it, but 8 out of 10 long time owners have been forced to become experts on their vehicles. Think about that for a second. I don't recommend anyone keep one as a vehicle you will ever rely on to any degree. As a toy, if you know what you are doing, great.

A syty is a vehicle that was an afterthought by GM execs, that ended up causing more headaches than sales. The vehicles are chock full of problems, mainly due to hasty financial decisions, and severely underengineered technology. It's based off an NA motor that was turbocharged, and put in front of a drivetrain like no other in the GM lineup (read: they made a lot of mistakes they never corrected). The ABS system is antiquated, barely works, with the braking & suspension the same as the truck lineup.

The Supra (I'm speaking of the MKIV's) was a vehicle in it's 4th generation, with years and years of research behind it, for its sports car nature, and its stout drivetrain. All of it was purpose-built and designed.

Basically you are going from end of the spectrum to the other. The fact that you got rid of the Supra because you put too much time and money into it only says to me that you will do the same to Syty's, as most any owner who DOESN'T want to go that route does exactly that. Only problem is that a Syty doesn't provide half the reliability or investment that a Supra does after you have spent a lot of time & money on it.

I know there are people out there who have had success stories, and drive their trucks often, but that is NOT the norm. Yes, I am an old school syty owner, who some will dismiss as cranky etc, but I've been in many automotive circles, and have had the opportunity to school & introduce many people to the syty scene. SOOO many of them were disappointed and had nothing but problems. "I have to change the plugs and wires again? I just changed them last week..."..."i have this noise in the transmission"..."i am overboosting...what do i do?"..."why is my idle rough? why do i have this stumble off idle?".....

I have at least 3 close friends who went the route of the supra, after having way too much time & money down the drain on Syty stuff. None of them regret the decision. These are guys who know how to wrench mind you...

Anyways, that's just my drawn out, pissy opinion. My attitude has nothing to do with the other post about me in this forum 8)

Damn Smeagol! I changed my mind, fuck this! Kidding...

I appreciate the warnings, and everything you said I totally expect and I'm ready for it. The thing is that it WILL be my toy...the MKIV is my toy, and I spend too much money on car payment and insurance for it just to be my toy that I don't drive everyday, you know? I can stand making a smaller payment on my weekend warrior, but not this enormous payment I'm making now. BTW, I am only a 24 year old 6th year US Navy-squid (E-5) so it's not like I can truly afford the car anyway! :lol:

So for a weekend warrior that is garage kept during the week and winter, I think a SyTy would be ideal for my situation. I'm no stranger to a wrench (single turbo owner would be retarded to not understand how shit works after a few months of hashing out little bugs!) or getting less than ideal results and having to figure out work-arounds.

I appreciate the warnings and will decline to heed them nonetheless. :wink:

Waiting to hear interest in a trade, but I'm not posting a FS on this forum out of respect for the community here.

I want to be the first to say this:

I am recommending calculated, gradual upgrades with whatever truck you buy.
If you buy a pile of parts, bolt them on and don't understand the 1227749, I will put money down on the next time it rolls under it's own power properly... Forever.

Be prepared to do the following too, irregardless:
Fuel Pump
IC Pump
IC Lines
Vacuum Lines
Thermostat
Filter
AFPR
Chip
CAT delete, replacement, dump, etc (pick your favorite overboost story here)
Cap
Rotor
Plugwires
Plugs

That's just me though.
