supra 6 speed getrag or automatic transmission. Could they fit?

The guys on the supra board have an adapter that enables them to run the th400 trans. Here is a pic of the engine adapter and the torque converter adapter plate. My question is since our transmissions are garbage and the getrags, stock autos, or built auto's are almost industructable could we run the adapter plate backwards on our trucks?

The adapter plate itself should work fine, they're really simple usually. The flywheel is a different matter. It looks for 1 like they had to add thickness to get the flywheel to mate to the tranny... which would equate to it being too short for our uses. If that isnt the case, then it could be made to work. But a supra is a lot lighter than one of our trucks ...

The MKIV Supra's weight is close to a Syclone's. If you were keeping the AWD, that would be a big obstacle.

why not just go with what works now, 4L80e or T-56.

The supra guys have adapter plates for t-56's so that tells u about their stock trans.

Did you read your own post? It says that Supra guys are swapping to the TH400 (a pretty heavy duty 3 speed). I'm pretty sure that they wouldn't go to all that trouble to swap to a 30+ year old GM design if the stock transmission was capable of the power they're making.

There are a couple of good solutions to the Sy / Ty transmission problem.

If you want a reliable trans and are willing to give up 4th gear, swap in a TH 350 or preferrably a TH400.

If you want a reliable 4speed automatic, pony up the $$$ and swap in the 4L80E.

If you want a manual, don't expect it to be reliable. If it is, great, but don't expect it.

Ok i will i have to look into the other options. The supra trannies are great for the power levels most of us are at. Bone stock the auto's will hold 550rwhp all day long and the 6spds guys run 1200rwhp+ through them with no problems. An mkiv in full trim weighs 3,4xx if it's a targa. Non targa it's a little lighter. It was just a thought and the big bonus is that the stock auto's can be had for ~300 and the 6spds from 1,800-3k. It seemed cost efficient to me.

I dont know where you got that idea from the stock auto's hold maybe 500rwhp the manuals are the ones that can do 1500rwhp.

I own one. See my sig. 550 all day long bone stock. I have since had the trans fully built by boost logic and for only 1800. The auto can now hold 850-900rwhp. Guys are running single digits through this tranny.

Re: supra 6 speed getrag or automatic transmission. Could they fit?

if your going through all that why not put a tranny in that you can buy parts for and build up like an AOD. they make everything for them reverse manuel VB's converters, adaptors. just no AWD.

i havnt seen anyone going single digits with a supra auto. i seen it done with a 200, and an AOD

boost logic, sound performance, wotm and many many more guys are single digits with the stock auto beefed up.

Torque is what kill the tranny. (We also have more traction & driveloss to stress the tranny) If I remember right most Supra, put down simillair HP/TQ. numbers. I bet your GT35R is well past 550ft-lbs. If you add all those up, plus the additional weight of a Typhoon, you might be starting to get close to built Supra's auto limits.

Well, then get another one and slap it in a Ty and see how it does.....

That's really the only way to prove whether it'll take the abuse or not.

I still think you'd spend less money by converting to either the TH400 or 4L80E than by running a Supra trans, but it's your checkbook, do what you like....

Dont forget what kills trannies isn't HP it's torque. So since the sy/ty has over 100 cubes on the lil 183/3Litres you should take that into account.

It was just a thought if it could actually work. It would be a cheap option.

Automatic transmission.

Automatic transmission.

Aren't the Silverado SS guys using the FLT level 5 tranny with good success. Those trucks are heavier, a lot have blowers or turbos, are AWD. The best options are either a modified 4L80 or 4L60. I've heard of only one FLTL5 breaking internally, but that truck had over 600 HP and a very high stall converter. Another failed due to the TCI torque converter input shaft fracturing.

Either way, you are looking at around $3K.
