Stumped...bad turbo?

My dad was driving the truck last night, went to take off and said the truck made a noise and laid right over. Won't make any boost now. Tried power braking it in the driveway, will only build 1-2 psi. Makes a kind of whirring noise...best way I can describe it. Took a video on my cell phone revving it in park...you can hear what I'm talking about. Is the turbo gone?

It appears the hose connecting to the crossover pipe is gaped open pretty wide, may just look that way. Id give it a good check under the hood, and check to make sure everything is indeed tight. Also check the vacuum lines just for the heck of it. Do you have some more info: stock turbo? miles? ever had this problem before? It seems strange the turbo would die that quicky, but it could happen. Was it getting full boost up until this occureed? A little more info and I'm sure this bunch can have you back on the road in no time. Good Luck.:tup:

Sounds like it ate a piece of the air tube. Look at the compressor wheel bent fins.

Best way to check is pull off the orange elbow and try and move the turbine shaft around. It will have a tiny bit of movement brand new, but you'll know if you have too much. Plus you can look at the compressor wheel for any damage.

After watching the video a couple more times it sounds like you have a heck of an air leak somewhere.

I had the air inlet open. Figured it out though, chunk of the crossover pipe broke off and went into the turbo. Luckily it sounds like it didn't get into the motor. Needs a turbo.

The pieces are probably held up in the inner cooler. I would drain/flush/clean that as well.

That's why I said toodaloo mutha f$%a to my stock set up just for that reason alone, time for a turbo and possible cold air rpm kit or move battery and do the 90 elbow and k&n filter! I know people bash the rpm "cold air" kit but hey at least its not gonna ruin a turbo!

Ordering an upgraded/rebuilt turbo from Sport Machines tomorrow, as well as figuring something out for a new air intake. Thanks guys. Really is a bummer though!

It appears the hose between your Ic and tb has come loose. Try fixing that.

What do you suggest, using duct tape to fix that? Or maybe he should bring it to you to fix so it can sit for years only to return unfinished?

I had that piece loose because I was trying to figure out what was going on. The intake air tube cracked and the turbo ate a chunk of it.

yep thats what happens when an turbo is spinning 100,000 rpm's and eats something. toss the stock air intake and purchase an rpm intake system . and rebuild or purchase an new turbo.

With the RPM CAI, where does the coolant overflow get relocated to? I am thinking about putting my OE intake tube on the shelf for preservation and never seen the RPM design. Now I am considering it.
