Stuck rotor button

I'm doing the basic ignition tune up on the Ty (cap, rotor button, plugs, wires). I've got the new plugs and wires in, but I can't seem to get the rotor button off. I know they can be a pain some times, but his one is really stuck. I've read here, and on other forums, about having to break them off but how would I go about doing that without damaging the distributor shaft? I've even heard of guys using a hammer and chisel to break hem off but I'm a little hesitant to try this for the same reason. Any suggestions?

Re: Stuck rotor button

I just did the hammer chisel thing on mine. Other option would be pull dizzy and cut it off CAREFULLY with die grinder and cut off wheel. Good luck.

Well I really don't want to pull the distributor, so I may have to resort to a hammer and chisel. Is there any "technique" I should be using if I go that route? Chiseling at the side seems like it would have a better chance of breaking it loose. Going from the top seems like it would have a better chance of not bending the distributor shaft. I don't know how much abuse a distributor shaft can take, it just seems like hitting it from the side with a chisel and hammer might do some damage.

Pretty sure I took a small saw to mine until I could get a screwdriver or needle nose on it and took it off in pieces. Think that's better than hammering it. Stop sawing before you hit metal.

It was a PITA

I seem to remember one of the old 'forgotten' tips was to use the curved end of your wheel lock wrench to pry the rotor off of the distributor.

Oh yeah! There was even a little cartoon showing how.

Didn't work for my stuck rotor. :squint:

Re: Stuck rotor button

use a soldering iron and melt a groove the length of it then lightly pry it off

Re: Stuck rotor button

I bent my wheel lock tool trying to remove mine. I used a pair pliers to remove mine piece by piece. I don't know if that was the best way....
