I need some insight here guys.

All my cladding is off the truck and I am ready to drop it off for paint.
Question is what is the best way to strip the old paint off?
I do not want to paint over it. Someone did a shitty time the first time around.

Any Chemical strippers that are safe for resins?
Sand by hand ??? D/A???

I want perfectly glass smooth cladding when its done.
Thats not asking too much is it?
LoL

Thanks,

I would be careful trying to sand all the old paint off. You could easily change the contour of the cladding.

I am going to test a piece of old cladding I have using plastic blast media for soft materials. I think low pressure just enough to cut the paint would work well. At my fathers shop I have a blast cabinet large enough to put all the cladding in.

Don't use any paint strippers as I know of none that actually works but is gentle enough for the cladding.

I agree with paint stripper. I wouldn't trust it.

If it can peel paint, what will it do to the resins in the plastic itself????

I would sand myself until I liked the finish, which is probably not at a point ALL the paint will be gone. Prepare for HOURS and HOURS of work, or if you are paying to have it done $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. No way around it.

Paint is expensive, try to get away cheap, and you get cheap looking stuff.

steel wool and brillo pads...

you can get diffrent grades of the steel wool and start out with the harsh stuff to take off the major paint..then drop down to the finer stuff for detailed work without gouging..

Does that mean you actually used steel wool?

I'm gonna have to do this soon as well... Was going to just carefully sand the parts for a week, or two, or so... Luckily I have some replacements sitting in original boxes in the basement. =) Stashed 'em there since '92! Probably worth their weight now...
