strange voltage prob?

Re: strange voltage prob?

Awesome info Dave  I will definitely be looking into doing this. It will clean up the engine bay of the add-on stuff I have going on under the hood and actually function better which goes beyond just looking cleaner. I love wiring and making it look good. Any knuckle head can connect 2 ends of a wire but making it look neat, clean, and functional takes more work and I like putting in the extra effort. Right now it all makes sense to me what you're saying so until I get to the point when I actually take the time to this I will save the questions if I have any. Hopefully I will do it sooner than later because it drives me nuts when things aren't fixed and/or working properly. I will keep you and everyone else posted with how I make out.. Thanks and I really appreciate you taking the time to asist me with this!

Re: strange voltage prob?

My only concern would be with the fog light system, if there is actually a problem some where which is causing the overly excessive draw and I move the feed to the back of the Alt will that create another problem? It may not show up on the volt gauge anymore but that might not necessarily mean the "problem" went away. Would I be better off making an entire fog light harness with a 30amp relay and heavier gauge wire to bypass the factory wiring but still utalize the factory switch? Am I over thinking this? To me there may problem with the fog lights beyond the alternator not keeping up. Turning the fog lights on with nothing else on and having it stall the truck or drop the idle 200-250 rpm seems rather extreme even if there was 110v bulbs... I will mess around with what's mentioned aboveand see what happens. I may be over thinking it

Re: strange voltage prob?

I didn't have time to do a full re-wire of the fog lights but I was under the dash finishing up the Alky kit install and I messed with the fog light wires. I pulled the orange wire out of the fuse panel that feeds the relay and I pluged it into ELEC socket which was for the rear air shock pump. I put in an inline 20amp fuse on it and my voltage drop went away. Not sure if I just masked the issue but when I flip the fogs on now the volt gauge doesn't move and the truck doesn't change how it's running. Eventually I will wire it to the Alt I guess but so far it seems good... Just wanted to update everyone on my findings. Its probably just pulling its power from a better circuit that can support the load
