Strange Vibration-Solved

As some of you might of read I had a electrical problem last week and had the Ty towed twice. It seems that one of the tow drivers hooked their chain hook on my drivers side half shaft and believe it or not bent it. After I had the electrical problem solved I had my mechanic install a new ES trans mount, new greasable joints for my prop shaft and a new U joint for the driveshaft.

Took the Ty for a drive on the expressway and at 40mph I got a bad vibration which I never had. Dropped the propshaft and the vibration went away. After the new greasable joints were installed the prop shaft was check for balancing by Chicago Diveshaft which has been in business for over 30-years. Still had the vibration. Had Chicago Driveshaft check it again and it was balanced.

Even though their was no vibration with the prop shaft out of the Ty there was no torque going to the front Diff. After having the Ty on the lift and in gear while running we took a flat blade screw driver and held it against the pass. halfshaft and it was a smooth sound. Now while holding the screw driver on the driver side half shaft, you heard the sound skip indicating that the shaft was not running true.

Bought a replacement half shaft at Napa #9436 for $60.00 minus the $78.00 core charge and had it installed and NO More Vibration!

I know a list member after reading through the archives mentioned that he went through 3-Napa shafts because of torn boots and after it was installed I did notice that the inner CV boot is rubbing on the shock. Measureing between the outer and inner CV boot on the old hald shaft the boots were farther apart exactly 3". On the new Napa shaft the boots were 2" apart. Now I'm trying to figure out if those metal clamps can be taken off the boot and slide the boot over and install another little clamps to hold it on to alow clearance so the inner boot doesn't rub on the shock.

Sorry for such a long post but being on the list for over 6-years and reading through a bunch of archives I have never heard of a problem where the half shaft was bent. So if your ever going top have a tow on a flat bed, make sure you look under the truck to see where they are hooking their chain up because you could be chasing a vibration problem like I did especially when multiple items were replaced involving the driveline.

you know, ive had a vibration ever since i was flat bedded and thought it was the propshaft cuz the boot was, well, missing, i pulled the shaft and it was still there, i always suspected it was the halfshafts but couldnt figure out why cuz the boots and everything looked pretty good. i will have too look into this....

Rick,

That woulda been me.. I got youre email but thought someone else may get some useful info out of my rambling so Im posting here (and I like to annoy the hell outta these poor souls :) )

Anyway, I bought new axles for both sides since I was gonna have the front end apart on my sy last year. I installed them right before driving from VA to GB KS. The drivers side boot let go around St. Louise (noticed it when I stopped for gas).

Once my truck was home from KS I pulled the axle and noticed a tear in the boot approx .250" long. It wasnt on the "raised" or "peak" of the boot but rather in what Id call one of the "vallies" in the boot. This led me to believe that either the boot was bad/deffective or a piece of road debri got to it somehow instead of it rubbing on the shock/A-arm.

Returned the axle and got another to replace it. This one lasted ~500mi before I noticed grease on the underside of the hood (I run without fender wells). The boot had split almost all the way around on the outter boot right where the boot retaining clamp was installed. I thought maybe this was just a lousey job from the remanufacturer when the clamp was installed. I returned this one for another new one.

I installed the third one only to find grease on the underside of the hood again only a few hundred miles later. I found that the boot had a "pin hole" in the "valley" of the outter boot. It was about .060 in diameter by eyeballing it.

After scrubbing what I can only describe as kryptonite grease off the eng compartment for the 4th time I gave up on NAPA axles and went to Autozone to get one. It hasnt crapped out yet but it only has ~250mi on it.

I dunno what caused the two holes in the boots. Road debri maybe. Maybe it was a deffect in the boot when it was molded (air bubble??). Dunno... Ive never figured out why my truck didnt like NAPA axles in the drivers side.

FWIW. The pass side is holding up fine (so far).

I have yet to have a vibration prob with either the NAPA axles or the Autozone axles. My truck drives... well... about as smooth as a truck would.

HTH..

I just replaced my driver's side half shaft with a Pep Boys piece. So far so good under 8 psi boosted launch and up to 110 mph.

George,

Take a look when the Ty is on the ground and see if the innner CV boot is rubbing on the shock. I know mine is with the Napa shaft so I think I'll do what a list member recommended and remove the metal band clamp and slide the boot over alittle and hold it in place with a hose clamp. It's just a matter of time before that boot gets worn out from rubbing on the shock.
