Stock Rebuild Checklist

Re: Stock Rebuild Checklist

just FYI to catch everyone up to speed, Im most likely rebuilding the motor with him.

he does not need total seal rings on a stock rebuild. this rebuild is on a budget and will most likely remain close to stock with a few cheap mods and a little port matching.

As for the L35 Rods... I have a stock SyTy motor, an L35 that came out of a 95 Bravada and a Vortec motor that came out of a 2001 Extreme, all the rods look identicle and have the same casting numbers on them, so I ask you..... how the hell do you identify L35 rods??

Just a minute while I think while typing or whatever you do on the keyboard. I would think of doing the rebuild like this. I would price all the parts to rebuild with the things that are in my opinion and most people on this site necessary to upgrade, like the pistons and the rods and the heads, because we all know how bad these parts are. And the L-35 rods and heads are cheap insurance for a stock engine. Then look at the total cost for you to put it together, After you do that compare the price you get with the cost that the vendors will charge you for the same thing. We have some great vendors on here and they are here to help us. A big plus is (they know our trucks unlike most shops.) For me here is one that I'm looking at, mainly because he is close to me.

there is no comparison, I can rebuild his engine for $1000 or less..... that simply doesnt compare to a $4000 engine... plus shipping....

I think that is awesome that you are doing the rebuild with him  . If you lived closer I would hit you up to help me when that time comes, as I am sure that I could learn alot from you. But being we don't live close and my time is limited, I would have to weight the two options and go with a vendor. But being I plan on a 600hp, 4L80 combo when the time comes, it would probability be the best thing to do and use a vendor.

Suposedly the piston rod end should be noticably more reinforced, honestly I have only seen them in pictures. On your SyTy motor, any chance it was rebuilt already or is it a replacement motor (Is the block pad stamped with a Ty type VIN?) I supose their is a chance GM stuck a few L35 rods, since some claim some 93 Ty's have L35's.

I would just use a set of the rods you have. Maybe you could compare them with the rods that come out of Hess's original motor. Do you want to a sell me a set of connecting rods?

Re: Stock Rebuild Checklist

I would personally just get TRW's and quality stock type replacement parts. Micheal Hood (sytyguy) sells almost all of those parts for great prices. I personally wouldn't bother trying to peice together everything from Summit and different sources unless you really know what your buying.

Re: Stock Rebuild Checklist

This article warns about rods from the Romulus and Tonawanda engine plants NOT being interchangeable. Interestingly, there is no mention of a change linked to the L35 engine... but it does discuss there being 2 distinct rod designs from each engine plant (based on weight).

The last post in this thread indicates that SyTy engines (at least his) came from the Romulus engine plant. So, either a Romulus rod or a Tonawanda rod should work on a Romulus crank (but only a Tonawanda rod on a Tonawanda crank).

The "L35" rod is now apparently the only 4.3 rod you can buy from GM: P/N 10201166. The only site I could find with pricing was
http://paceperformance.com/index.asp?PageAction=PRODSEARCH&txtSearch=10201166

For that kind of $$ you can get the Eagle rods from RPM. So, if you go to junk yards, It seems safe to say that rods from any 4.3 from 1995 to present should be the "L35" design, but look for the balance pad design that indicates the correct factory rod, based on the rod factory (or engine code factory degination) to match your existing engine.

Now to find a junkyard that will be that accommodating......

I also found a discussion in this thread that paints a 'not-too-flattering' picture of the TRW L2441 piston quality. Anyone have recent experience with the TRW (Speed Pro) pistons?

Re: Stock Rebuild Checklist

I'm not planning on buying anything but exhaust from RPM... i'm just using them as reference for part numbers, sizes and such...

Re: Stock Rebuild Checklist

Does anybody have a part number for a nice set of rings that work well with stock pistons?
