Stock Rebuild Checklist

Hey all,

Okay so I fried my motor.. I am looking to do a full stock rebuild. Now please I don't want to hear the "now is a perfect oppurtunity to build up" line. Because i choose not to have my ty set the world on fire. I'm looking for quality parts for a stock rebuild. Specifically I'm looking for a good set of rings that will work with stock pistons, all the required gaskets for a top and bottom end rebuild, all the necessary bearings needed (crankshaft, rod, minus camshaft). I'd like to know who makes quality parts and if there is a couple nice places i shoul buy these things from. I plan on full stock rebuild with the possiblility of L35 heads depending on timing and money. Thank you guys in advance for any help!

if i was to go that way with the build . this is what i would do

pistons - trw lf 2441 good piston for the $$

rings - total seal or ? whatever your budget can handle .

victor reinz headgaskets and complete engine gasket kit - do not use fel-pro !!! JUNK -

any of the typical bearing choices are o.k. to go with

L35 heads would be agood choice if u can get your hands on some. will help alot .and no special work needed to install .

dont skimp on machine work !!!!! make sure the machine shop understands that this engine will see boost psi at 15 psi or above regularly . so that can set gapping and clearences accordingly .

The stock pistons are mad out of breakownium.
You have to at least put forged pistons in it.

Really.

And L35 Rods for sure.They are twice as strong as the stock rods.

I would highly recommend those two, you can do everything else stock. The stock parts give so little room for error. You could rebuild your motor and have the same exact problem happen as before and you could be looking at another rebuild.

Okay let me start compiling.. Remember I've never been in a situation where a rebuild was needed, so help me out on sizes and everything, don't worry i'm not doing this rebuild alone.

Rings - Total Seal...Summit - now there are a crap load of different kinds... Am i looking for a 4.030 bore for these rings? Top ring? Bottom Ring? Ring Thickness?

not l35 push rods...l35 connecting rods. 4.30 pistons....or whatever your machine shop recommends that it will take to clean the cylinders up....30 should be plenty..and the pistons can be bought readily avail..

let whoever you get the pistons from get you a matching set of rings as well.

rpm can probably get you all of this stuff @ one time... can't beat one stop shopping. :tup:

You might want to just find the shop doing work, and let them quote you for parts. Even if they charge just a tad more it will be worth the hassles of not having to worry about if you got the right sizes, etc.

Just tell them what you want, let them quote you. Shop I have used charges 15% more labor if customer supplies parts. I guess I can't blame them either.

Check around, ask questions, get and check references, find a good shop, follow above advice. Will the shop warranty a turbo motor rebuild? Do they assemble or is your help assembling? I notice you specifically left out cam bearings. I would not do that. I would also consider line-boring the block and a balance job. World of difference in my book. Have you considered an assembled short or long block from, say, RPM?

:2cents: Pull your motor first, and see what for sure you are going to need. Also find a GOOD machiane shop, like don W. said, ask around. What is your budget?

The way you guys are talking has me worried. I still have the stock parts in my Sy. Are the stock rods and pistons realy that bad. If I take a shop my block how much average to do the work if I buy all the parts. I have seen 4 bolt mains blow up on this site and stock internal trucks get low 11's.

I think its BS that the shops charge more if you provide the parts....you are saving THEM time from finding parts for you ( and charging you extra for the profit on the parts , dammit ) ---

It's just that the knock kills these things stock.

If your truck hasn't been knocked to death,it will hold up fine (as long as you don't overboost it)

The other thing is,it would be retarded to not upgrade the rods/pistons (and cam IMO) since it's already apart during a rebuild.

engine is out to do trans, motor mounts and heads. Compression was fine and I dont have the cash for a rebuild. I dont plan on more then 15lbs street and 18-20 lbs when I race on race gas.

If the compression is fine,don't worry about it. The engines will last a LONG time as long as you don't knock them or run them lean.

thanks. lean is not a problem. In fact my truck was running to rich. I was showing knock but I got it down to 3-4* at most.
Sorry to hijack but this thread started to scare me. I do plan on doing a full rebuild in a few years. I will just send it to RPM and let them go at it, but for now I just want to enjoy the SY.

Just a minute while I think while typing or whatever you do on the keyboard. I would think of doing the rebuild like this. I would price all the parts to rebuild with the things that are in my opinion and most people on this site necessary to upgrade, like the pistons and the rods and the heads, because we all know how bad these parts are. And the L-35 rods and heads are cheap insurance for a stock engine. Then look at the total cost for you to put it together, After you do that compare the price you get with the cost that the vendors will charge you for the same thing. We have some great vendors on here and they are here to help us. A big plus is (they know our trucks unlike most shops.) For me here is one that I'm looking at, mainly because he is close to me. :tup:
