Stock rear end failures?

Has anybody actually broken, or have direct knowledge of breaking, anything other than an axle in a stock rear end?

Jeremy blew up the posi part of the diff. We did save the gears.

20psi on the brakes building boost. Has an Eaton I believe now, maybe Auburn I forget.

I've never heard of one.

Fears of - but no actual reports. Kinda like death from swine flu.

Keep 'em coming...so far as suspected:

Other than trying to hold a ton of high boost torque against the brakes, I haven't heard of anything else failing. So, with a $200 set of aftermarket axles (which hopefully wouldn't break)...and rear discs that would keep the tire from making an exit, even if the axle did break, there isn't much basis for concern?

I would be ok through the 11's, once you get into 10 range I would want a bit of safety factor for my health.

I have stock rear in my TTV8 setup still, run as fast as low 11's. But I have a 8.5" I will be building up for the future.

I do anticipate the need to build a new rear end for my powertrain. However, I'm not sure if 3.42 will be too much gear. I can do 3.42's in either 8.5" 10 bolt, or 12 bolt. If I need to go down to 3.08, I'll most likely go with a 8.8" Ford. Just hoping I can keep the stock rear alive long enough to find out. If it fails, as long as it's not a catastrophic "tire flying off and crashing truck into the wall" situation, I'm okay with that...the stock rear end is disposable. Cheap aftermarket axle upgrade and disc conversion should hopefully keep really bad things from happening until I can sort that out.

I would do a 8.5" then you have options for both 3.42 and 3.08. If you go with the ford your option window gets cut in half.

I like to leave my options open.

I bought a 8.5" out of a full size truck, bought flanges for 9" style axles (gets rid of c-clips). Will have custom axles built, throw a posi I have for it in with some gears and we are good.

$100 Axle
$100 Flanges
$100 used posi
$320 axles
$250ish new gears/bearing.

Less than 1k and it should never break. But along with you I am running the stock rear while I sort everything else out.

Re: Stock rear end failures?

Not the stock rearend but I have broken the front diff. Broke all the spider gears the ring and pinion and the case. 8psi launch on nitto's

Upgrade

I suffer from boost envy
Re: Stock rear end failures?

I built an 8.5 for my camaro for about $1k with all new except the gears. I got lucky and it came with the gears I wanted. Stock flanges though. I'd imagine a used posi would need new fiber plates at least.
To bad you can't get lock rites for cheap anymore.

Re: Stock rear end failures?

Last year or so I had the rear in my ty fail on the highway, Ended up being a tooth broke off the ring gear. I assume that the fact that the original owner of my ty raced it 2wd for years is where the damage came from. Not sure why he did it but he did. I found a old pic if him doing a burnout from a old meet in Ohio I think.

I thought it was in Ohio somewhere since that is where the truck came from originally.Did you know the guy who owned my ty originally? I just wonder why he bought a typhoon to make it 2wd is all? I know from what I heard from the second owner that he got it running pretty good times that way but still seems a little odd.

Daron is a world traveler, his nick name is Waldo. He lived in Ohio for several years.

He is an original ty owner also, but being he is about to retire this year he is OLD as dirt also.

Heck he hasn't had any hair since the 70's bands were out.

Wow, old thread resurrection. Hair bailed late 80s, barely able to drink legally.

The guy who did the 2wd deal on this truck talked about making it as light as possible. I remember him saying he could get it to hook without the AWD and therefore it was a waste...
