Re: stock rear diff 1,000?

This comes up a lot and the non zr2 4x4 5 speed from 95 or so and up drum brake rear
end is a direct 8.5 bolt in with a 3.42 "posi"

I did see a post on a s10 site that on the disc brake rear's you can use the 8.5 2wd housing with 4wd brakes to get the correct width but I have not confirmed this.

Now this is good to know.

Ill give you some good info. Find a late 90s Impala ss or Caprice. They have a 8.5 rear. All you have to do is weld the leaf pads on, swap out the gears for 3.42 and grind of the old bullshit and use corvette wheels and your set. The rear is 2" wider than our 7.5 stocker however all the corvette Z06 wheels require a 1"spacer one the stock rear to fit properly. If you have the impala rear no spacers and your money!! The axles will have to be swapped out for our 5x 4.5 bolt pattern. Impalas are 5x100mm. All the parts are available from summit of jegs. Leaf pads and axles U bolts ect. Even has rear disc breaks.

Might as well buy a 9in for all that cash.

I just posted one of those rears for sale. It's def a cool concept and way to go, and changes your wheel options too.

It'd be about a third the price of a ford 9" rear, especially if you can do the welding.

I am looking to find a 3.42 8.5 drop in . By the time u buy a used rear, change gears, axles whatever u r going to spend some coin.

I have one, but freight shipping always kills the deal. That is why I posted the info on the 2wd with the 4x4 rotors it may also need axles but that's lots easier than finding a 4x4 5 speed non zr2 housing!

I would love to ditch my spacers, hmmmm

Also, another good option. Possibly. I'd prefer a lack of spacer, but if it saves money...

Wouldn't that be a 94-96 Impala SS or Caprice rather than a late 90's? If so, what about the Buick roadmaster wagon. Joe Keller has one. You could steal his.

Re: stock rear diff 1,000?

All ZR2 rear diffs are 8.5 (94-up) and roughly 3" wider. They will bolt right in, the stock driveshaft will also work. All 2wd trucks, including the Xtreme, are only 7.625s.

Disc brakes are 98-up ZR2 only, the 94-97 did not have them. The rear diffs are also different, so swapping over disc brakes requires a spacer on a 94-97 diff, the axle tubes are actually longer on a disc brake rear.

not entirely correct. the 8.5 is only found in 94-99.5 ZR2's. The 99.5-up ZR2's are 8.625 axles.

be careful when dealing with the B-body axles, at least as far as width goes. They may all be 8.5's, but when I was researching them before I bought one for my '52 Cadillac, there were at least 3 different widths used on those cars. I think the wagons had a width all to their own, then there were two different widths or styles for the sedans.

I used a ford 8.8 stock width out of an explorer and swapped in a bravada front diff with 3:73 gears probably the cheapest and one of the stronger options.

Interesting idea. However for a 9 sec or 8 sec build. You would be way out of gears on a 3.73. I think a 3.08 be better. I'm almost out with a 3.42. I have to take her to 6500 in 3rd to make it to 135mph.

Re: stock rear diff 1,000?

Working on a couple of ideas. Hopefully something easy and obtainable for anyone. Not looking for a Damn huge project. Welding perches is easy enough, but I don't want any more fab than that. Buy stuff and bolt it in.

Re: stock rear diff 1,000?

Hahaha, I have done similar in th past on long travel 2wd's. Just a little wider. That thing is a work of art,but I doubt my next three builds put together are going to make the power you will be. Hell I just want 800 crank, 650 awhp
