Stock 4l80e vs. 700r4???

I did a search but didnt find what I was looking for (i.e. im too lazy to look through all the threads).

I have an opportunity to get a hold of a stock 4l80e trans. from a 2002 3/4 ton avalanche for pretty damn cheap. I was just curious as to how well an unbuilt 4l80 would fare compared to a 700r4? I really dont want to dump a ton of cash into building a 4l80. Thanks!

The cost of the 4L80E swap is not in the rebuilding of the tranmission. You need a controller. The stock 4L80E converter weights a ton (exageration) but performance replacement cost around $1K. You need the crossmember, TC adapter and tailshaftshaft , plus lengthing and short of the front and rear shaft. The other problem is that you have to unbuild a 4L80E to convert it to AWD. I bet I could rebuild a 4L80E with a basic rebuild kit for 500-600 (assuming I do the work) that would be stronger most any 700R4. It's the other stuff that would probably run me a good $3500-4000.

Buy a gm 80e tcu- junkyard cheap less than 100
Buy convertor- I have a coan yeah it cost 900 , budget ones are cheaper
shafts longer and shorter 150 both
correct output shaft 250ish
x-member 250ish

if you already have the 80 in running condition , swap the output and call it a day

so 1650 plus the tranny if your good with your hands

I've got a 2001 80e in running condition with ~50k miles on it.. I was thinking of tearing into it and just replacing the output shaft and installing the trans-go reprogram kit. I've got the ATSG manual + video as well as a few good rebuild manuals I've found online. I'm fairly good at tearing stuff apart and being able to put it back together in working condition. About how long would you say it would take to swap the output shaft and install the trans-go kit? Oh I was going to throw a short shift shaft in there as well...

My 80e is a stock trans that just had the output shaft changed and was "gone through" while it was apart and found to be in excellent condition (was recently rebuilt before I got it). So far its holding up extremely well behind my new motor. I have a hughes 3500 stall with single disc lockup and it was around $800 shipped over 3 years ago.

if you set aside a weekend for the project , you should be fine .

Want to borrow my 80e pump puller ? the rest of the stuff falls out after that. take a part out snap a pic and so on . youll do just fine.

Re: Stock 4l80e vs. 700r4???

My tuner Rick at Synergy Motorsports runs a stock 4l80e with his twin turbo'd silverado extra cab 4wd 5500lbs or more. I am not saying this will be tha case with everybody but he is making 800+tq and Hp to the wheels. the stock 4l80e is taking it like a champ.
