I know that you have a love for birds. Unfortunately, I do not share the love. I'm looking for a safe way to rid my parking area of flying demon shit. My first thought was an ultrasonic unit. Then I read an article that stated birds cannot hear in the range most units put out. I also saw a propane powered blast cannon set up with a timer. Cool factor there, wife not amused. My father used to be business partners w/ this D!(K. He wormed my dad out & dad lost the investment. I didn't think he could make it being one of the ingredients is controlled by the feds, and he is a felon.
The stuff has a short shelf life, like 6 months, but it works.
We'd take life size owls and drill holes all over, then soak them in the BirdShield.
Smells like grapes.

I've tried rubber snakes and even bought a two foot tall owl from Homer Depot. Screwed a pipe flange with an 18" piece of pipe through the base so it could swivel in the wind. I also saw the big boobie flags. Chip, I will not buy just on principle. I briefly considered my 2900psi pressure washer with the 0 degree nozzle...Jim

What kind of birds are they? (or do you mean ALL birds?)
The balloons actually work pretty well, as do mylar strips (you can get them at party stores). Fruit tree netting if the conditions are right...but it has to be taut.
There are other remedies depending on what kind of birds you're talking about. And of course, a combination of things works well.
RE: BirdShield. Don't know much about this product but it seems aimed at crop damage vs. general deterrent. It makes claims about smell and taste dissuading birds but guess what...birds do not have a sense of taste or smell (if they did, you think they would eat bugs?). (A few exceptions: gulls and vultures have keen sense of smell)

It's something in the grape that keeps birds away, hence the end product smells like grapes to humans. They were starting to market it to airports (which is not a crop), because birds & jet engines don't mix too well. As long as it does not get rained on and wash it away, it would work all season. We tried the owl trick under a roof to keep it dry and it kept birds from nesting under the eaves that had been for 25 years prior. For the longest time, my parents house didn't have many birds around, having a jug or two, and rags and gloves that were soaked in it.:2cents:

Steve, robins. They are in my neighbors arborvites. They crap all over my vehicles 10 minutes after I wash them. His trees are less than 10 feet from my driveway. If you can't think of anything right away, maybe on the way to Jack's house you could swing by and make suggestions. Thanks...Jim
Jack, not that I would but, if I were to shoot a .22 and hit said bird, I would have to clean it up. And the round will not stop at said bird and it might hit your roof. Still a good idea?
