Starter not working Help!

I had a starter doing bad and one day it just stopped working all together! I replaced it with a marine grade gear reduction. I wrapped it in heat shielding. But the bad news is when I tried to start my Syc nothing happened same as before! I have heard of some kind of purple wire problem? What is this and how can I fix it! Summers coming and I want to drive my truck!

Re: Starter not working Help!

Did you bench test the old or new starter? I'd be looking for a simple solution like a poor ground or ground cable. I'm guessing the purple wire you are talking about is the fusible link. If bad no power will go to starter. It also could be a corroded positive cable. A bad starter usually has a high current draw. To check try starting the truck with the headlights on. If you see a lot of dimming or the lights completely go out then your starter is bad (99.9% of the time). If you get no dimming and the starter does not engage, your not getting power to the starter. If the starter motor spins but does not engage you have a bad Bendix.

Re: Starter not working Help!

The "purple wire issue" is the failure, because of heat, of the small wire that energizes the stater solenoid. Not the bat cable but the little one behind it on the starter. Put your meter on that term and someone activate the key and see if you have voltage. If everything else in the truck works than that's probably the issue.

You can test the starter itself by shorting across to that term from the bat term.

Re: Starter not working Help!

Thank you very much pulled the purple wire it was cracked and shorting out. I spliced it out. It cranks over just fine now! I put a smaller after market start on it so I shouldnt have any more heat problems
