Re: Start them wrenching at a young age

I also have early wrenching memories watching my dad put a tunnel ram and duel quads on his new VEGA GT. The next weekend we went to my uncles and they spent the day and night sanding, painting it and adding the necessary L-88 hood scoop. This is one of my oldest memories. The Vega was also the first car I went 100 MPH in. I would intensionally waste time in the morning so he would have to drive me to school. All the kids were there in the morning playing kickball and I'd ask "dad can you spin the tires a little when you leave?" I only had to ask once and from then on for the next few years everytime he dropped my off he dropped he'd hit the hammer just a little.

Hopefully you have plans for a room different than last years.

Seeing you in your boxers on the floor, and throwing you the bed spread still hurts the eyes to this day.

Nah - we're gonna kick it with you :)

My folks are coming with the 5th wheel and we're staying with them at a campground not too far from the hotel. We'll be spending a lot of time at the hotel.

My parents have tried to make it the last couple years and this year they are extending their vacation to come to KC.

my dad is the one that got me into cars/trucks..

one of my oldest memories is him asking me to help him hold up a freshly painted fiberglass hood on a 71 corvette we were rebuilding.. i was to young/weak and i dropped it.. scratch the new paint.

I got yelled at for hours.. but eventually we laughed about it.

Unfortunately, my dad didn't teach me much about fixing cars..

..But my son now has me in remedial training - Thanks Ian!

It's weird when you reach that stage where your teaching your dad about things instead of asking about everything.

I still remember discussions about mechanics of internal combustion engines and rotary engines.

Having a dad with a sy/ty is great, I reccommend you guys get one

Re: Start them wrenching at a young age

My dad taught autoshop for 18years. Started the year I was born, finished year I graduated high school.

Cars were always around growing up. Of course all the non car people found it funny we had a 14 car garage at home, and a driveway paved, 3 lanes wide ~200ft long.

Restored my first car with my dad at 13 yrs old (62 nova convertible, he still owns it, with my name on his will for it)

Restored my 2nd car for myself at age 15 (63 Nova, still own that car also)

I think my dad is on his 5-6th full restoration now which is a 63 Impala convert. Which should be finished in a couple months.

Here he is blasting the underside about 6 months ago. Car now runs, drives, just missing doors, interior, fenders. Body driveline is all done.

Being 2500 miles from home though, leaves little time to work with him on cars though.

On my last visit he left the final firing of the impala for us to do when I was there.

Re: Start them wrenching at a young age

I've restored at least 10 cars with my dad.. all where a blast..
as I grew up I got more and more into them, decided to start a few projects of my own.. started with jeeps cause they were easy and simple.. went to s10s, then to sy/tys..

hell the only reason I traded my 2nd ty for my sy was my dad.. whenever we would see one at a car show he would make comments about how much more he liked the sys than they tys.. and how it would be a great truck for him to drive.

Both trucks are in my name, but I really only have the syclone for my dad.
