Sqeaky rear window

Typhoon # 1643
I've owned my Typhoon since 1993. Pretty much since the beginning, there has been a sqeak in the area of the rear window. I, as well as every mechanic I've seen, have tried to figure out the sqeek - no help. Also, the button in the front that pops open the rear window doesn't - though that started just 2-3 years ago. Any suggestions as to a fix?

Re: Sqeaky rear window

Try replacing the the striker, round silver loop thing gm part #15547909, you prob also have to adjust the latch, take off the plastic tailgate cover and there are two 10mm nuts, adjust the top one a little at a time and keep trying to pop the window open until it does it easy, and is still tight so it wont sqeak anymore. After I did this, the squeak went away, but if there are alot of potholes then it still does squeak(and living in pittsburgh theres so many damn potholes). Next thing im going to try is some type of lubricant on the rubber weatherstripping, so when it rubs against the window maybe it wont be as loud I dunno. My blazer rides rougher than the typhoon and the window doesnt squeak at all...

Re: Sqeaky rear window

I have had good luck by spraying the tailgate hinges with lube. If that don`t work you can adjust the tailgate window latch.
The release problem is a weak solonoid or low voltage situation. New solonoid or use a relay.

I chased mine in both my ty and my blazer and it was the hinges. figures last place I check.

Thank you all for the input. I have tried so many different lubricants - no dice. I will try to open it up and see what may be loose or needs te realligned.

Re: Sqeaky rear window

mine also did squeek - what i made is : lubed everything that moves (hinges, etc.) and
i soaked the mechanism that holds the window shut on the tailgate with the grease from the batterypoles - that helps the long term in my case ...

... hope this helps, pat.

btw.: watch your head n hair while being under the open glass - this grease is fawkin sticky :rotf:

Ours rattles... I found it to be the plastic grommit that is in the latch that the shaft of the window peice go's through... I called GM for a replacement but the want to sell me the whole darn latch for 145.00 ... So.. I've got to look for somthing else to inslulate the long shaft part of the window chrome latch part.
Ours could squeek too but the rattle is too loud to hear a squeek :)

Re: Sqeaky rear window

It is very frustrating. It is worse during the summer. In the winter, it is hardly noticeable. It's embaracing when I have someonein the car. The vehicle is in very good condition and then it sounds like an old VW Beetle circa 1969!

First things first, I need to burn my PROM so I can put in my chip and 50# injectors to see what this thing can really do.

I will definitely try out eveything suggested. I am nervous about taking the rear door apart as I sometimes lose my patie3nce or hurry up a job.

I had the same problem...Tried WD-40, electric tape, adjust the latches so on but just didnt go away. What my mech did was, to cover the latches (above the white rectangular things on the tail...sorry dont know the exact word in English) with polyurethane with a coupl of milimeters thickness. Tightened all the screws, bolts, and nuts, adjusted the lock and now it is all gone forever !!! (At least thats what he said on a money back guarantee)
I hope it helped ;)

Re: Sqeaky rear window

when i bought mine it didn't rattle and i looked and it looks like some kinda of sticky thick tape stuff put on the edge where the window rides on the tailgate and keeps it all tight

Re: Sqeaky rear window

I have tried lubricants, tightening screws, etc. still squeeky. I have not tried to disaaemble the area around the latch as I am worried I would mess it up and couldn't put it together again. As for the solution from thew gentleman from Turkey, I am not quite sure what your mechanic did. A pic would be nice.

Still trying to live squeek free!

Re: Sqeaky rear window

For a temporary fix, wrap some electrical tape around it then slam the glass shut :2cents:

Re: Sqeaky rear window

Would you recommend takling off the hinges and basically putting them in some lubricant for awhile. Last time I messed with the hinges (1993) was to tighten them - of course I over-tigntened and before I knew it BAM the rear glass exploded into little pieces :banghead: :banghead: - thus I am very squeemish about messing with the hinges.

Re: Sqeaky rear window

I orderd new weather strips..... the one that go's on the tail gate. and the one that go's on the body.
I think that solved our problem... boy are new GM seals "poofy" :)

The tail gate "pops" open and so does the glass now. Amazing how compressed the old ones got!

Both seals were 90.00 from GM my cost.
Hope that helps... Scott~

I never even thought about that!! It makes sense since it is an AZ truck and the heat and dryness really put a damper on rubber. I'm going to have to try that also since I have tried the lubricating route! I have used more lubrication on my Ty for this particular problem than ANYTHING else I have tried to lube. Besides the weather stripping in the back is 13 years old!

Re: Sqeaky rear window

I had asked my wife if the noise was gone and she said she thought so...

I went for a ride in it with her yesterday evening and it usto rattle on the cracks just down the road from our house and over large bumps. Nothing... all sounds tight... I think I need to adjust where the window latches because it's too tight for the power window pop'r to pop it open. The key works fine.
Guess our work's never done huh..

Re: Sqeaky rear window

What finally fixed it for me after trying everything else was when I replace my fuel pump and tightened up the 4 nuts that hold the rear bumper in place. I've been squeak free ever since.
