Sputters but wont start

Still cant get the Sy running again after a new dist, wires, cap and rotor.

Swaped the new MSD for the old, known working dist.

Removed off Drivers side valve cover to confirm TDC by watching the valves, looking at the timing mark and watching the rotor.

My timing mark is on the money.

Have the dist in the correct position. Timing light confirms while cranking the truck: shows mark at 0 degrees.

Brown/black stripe wire is disconnected.

it sputts but wont start. pulled 2 plugs from each side of the block. confirm they are recieveing gas by the smell and they are wet. and I can hear the fuel pump priming.

What else could it be? The ignition has to be getting some spark due to the timing light flashing.

it just wont catch and its killing me.

Re: Sputters but wont start

Assuming your timing is correct have you checked fuel pressure? Maybe you have low fuel pressure and its not enough to fire the cylinder but enough to foul the plugs?

DIS module maybe bad. Also try the old cap and rotor just for chits and giggles.

Re: Sputters but wont start

NYTY: I dont have a tool to check fuel pressure. I did remove the fuel pressure regulator when i changed the pass. side valve cover gasket. but i put everything back the way I found it. is there an easy way to check fuel press?

RY: I have swaped out 2 different dist. with 2 brand new cap and rotors. The old working one and a brand new MSD piece. The old dist. worked fine before all this. this whold damn thing started when I was changing the cap and rotor and discovered the old cap screw had broken off in the dist. so while i had the dist out i figured I would swap it out for a new one just for safety. Boy was I wrong in doing all this.

My bet is yur 180* out. I know you checked. Been there, done that, check again. Yes, the timing mark will show correct when you're 180* out. Want proof? hook up to cyl 4. Also check that each wire does, in fact, go to the correct cyl. There's two marks on the campener. Make sure you're looking at the correct one. Sputtering, as oposed to backfiring, tells me you might be way late.

OK wait a sec, you said this whole thing started when you decided to change the cap and rotor? Did the truck have problems before you started to change the cap and rotor? Im thinking you have gotten the wires mixed up. From what you are describing it sounds like the firing irder isnt correct. Did you label the wires when you took them off? I would check that first. Or your 180 out?

If you didn't mark the wires to where they went on the cap the I also think you might be 180 out.

I did the exact same thing when I first got my Ty. The thought that a previous owner could have dropped the dist in 180 out and then just switched wires around instead of doing it right never crossed my mine when I pulled all the plug wires without marking things.

Re: Sputters but wont start

I thought i was 180 out too but its wanting to catch, not backfire.

My old cap had the posts marked. I double checked them against the 1992 Factory service manual. All good.

I have looked at my wires twice now and and they go to the correct cylinders.

I noticed the 2 marks on my balancer. but when I brought the engine to TDC i marked the correct balancer and I saw the rotor pointing at where #1 if the cap had been on. EVen made a mark on the upper intake becasue its basically pointing right at it.

Might just run out and swap it out 180 degrees just to see what will happen.

Re: Sputters but wont start

Well I will be damned.

Swaped the dist out 180 and sure enough it fired right up.

Damn. you all are good.

one final question: My timing mark is way off and I dont have enought slack on the 4 pin connector on the dist to rotate it enough to bring the mark to TDC. What have i done wrong now?

Thanks everyone. eariler in the day i thought i would never hear this thing run again.

Re: Sputters but wont start

Well now you're off just one tooth. Lift the dist (ya, I know, it's a PITA) and turn it one more tooth in the correct direction. Now when you do this it may not drop in all the way because of the oil pump drive. If so hold down on the dist by hand and have someone hit the starter briefly. Usually it'll go though. When you are all done make sure the dist hold down fork is, in fact, up on the dist. and dist is tight.
