If it aint one thing its another. Somehow the top bolt hole for my drivers side brake caliper is stripped out. i heard something come loose and bounce under the truck, ended up being the caliper bolt. Its been quite a while since my last break job, so im a curious how this would happen. I am assuming i must replace the spindle to fix this problem, any help would be appreciated.

If i do have to replace it, does anyone have one or know the best place to look? are they the same as a 4x4 jimmy of the same year?

can you tap & rethread. maybe a helicoil....that's patch work if you need to do it that way.

Helicoil is what my shop is recommending, they guarantee it to be stronger than the original! But i dont know.

Re: Spindle replacement???????'s

only time we use helicoils @ my shop is when the customer doesnt want to pay for spindles. for us it's a "patch job" fix. we have never had problems with helicoils, but if you want it done right, the spindle will be the way to go. we've used them, and im sure we will always use them. and like i said, we never had a problem. but it's still just a quick fix.

yeah definitely a huge price difference.

Helicoil is stronger than stock if done right. Had to do one on my Ty ~7years ago, In 40k mile had ZERO issues.

In fact when designing jigs, and suck for manufacturing parts sometimes engineers will spec helicoils from the start on holes that get used often. They are stronger.

I wouldn't worry about a helicoil at all.

i've used helicoils quite often one heavy disel applications, so i wouldn't have any fear doing it on a brake caliper bolt

I had the same exact problem. I used the helicoil to fix mine. It lasted about 5 years/10,000 miles and then it failed. Now Im looking for a spindle.

Re: Spindle replacement???????'s

Only problem on a brake caliper bolt is that you have to remove it for maintenance. After you remove it a couple times the helicoil will start to crack and come out. $100 for a spindle?
I got a used one from a junk yard and it was $250. Most yards will not pull the bearing assembly out and they want to charge you for that. If you have ABS, you have to specify one with teeth on it unless you don't mind pulling the old one out of the old spindle and putting it in the new one.(Been there, done that).
