Something in the oil?

I was cleaning up under the hood on my sy and figured I would check the oil. Everything seemed fine except I noticed some very tiny pieces of something on the dipstick, about the size of a finely sharpened pencil lead, i figured maybe dirt from the tube so i wiped it clean and checked it again same thing, i did this probably 15 times and still there were a few pieces they dont look like clean metal shavings or nothing like that, more like tiny rust/dirt particles. When I got the truck the oil was nasty, the guy I got if from had owned it almost 7 years and only put 200 miles on it so im guessing it hadnt been changed since before he got it, it looked like it was due for an oil change before the 200 miles he put on it. This leads me to believe maybe that old oil has broke down and driving it is loosening it up. As soon as I drove it home I changed the oil with royal purple synthetic and a wix filter and have since put about a thousand miles on it, no problems runs fine good oil psi. This just has me worried I dont want to damage something that can be avoided. Any suggestions? Or idea to what this is?

Royal Purple was a great choice fosho. I would have flushed it 1st, but not with a solvent as it is not good for the turbo. I would have ran some cheap oil through it for about 500miles, flushed and ran it again for about 1500-2000 miles, then put Synthetic in. Good synthetics such as RP, M1, RL, etc have great detergents and will break up sludge in side motor. The filter should be picking most out, so change filter a few times and should be GTG. If the chunks are a little to big, you may wanna inspect oil feed and return line off turbo so you dont burn it up. I would be willing to bet that it was flakes off of valves and springs on cylinder head, and sitting like that, moisture will accum. under valve cover, so thats probably what made chunks start to flake in the 1st place.

X2, plan on changing the filter every few 100 for a while. Changing the oil a time or two in-between. Might cut the filter and watch particle contamination until fairly clear.

Thanks for the input I was thinking of changing the filter and oil a couple times like you said but to be honest I don't really know much about these trucks and I was afraid of it screwing something up if I drove it like that. And I will definitely check those oil lines to the turbo and flush them out good :tup:

It will be difficult to "flush" the turbo line and keep it that way if crud keeps coming. If you're really worried then Race Proven Motors sells a turbo filter kit that filters just the oil going to the turbo.

I'm gonna stick with my original suggestions and recommend you cut your filter and examine the element. Crud will accumulate in the bottom of the folds. Keep a fresh filter on the truck (cheap insurance) and keep cutting untill very little crud is found.

The dipstick tube sometimes starts to rust on the inside and flakes get on the stick when u pull it out.
