solid engine mounts - correct bolts?

Someone else took my truck apart and the syty parts cd just says engine bolt.

I am putting on solid motor mounts and they don't seem the right size but are the only bolts I have remotely big enough.

What do you guys think?

The bolts I have:

In the mounts with all the thread used up there is play:

left or right...

The bolt is just under 1/2 inch I think...

Are the bolts wrong? The mounts fit perfectly onto the engine but there is play when I use these bolts through the frame pads and mounts - doesn't seem right.

Any help appreciated.

OK - checked the parts cd again - it is a 4.75 long 7/16x14 bolt which is what I have in the pics but that looks loose to me.

Surely the engine can't be allowed to slide forward 1cm randomly?!!:tdown:

Do people put washers in there?

those are stock bolts, you didn't get new ones with the mounting pads? get some new ones that are shorter

I thought I coud use the stock bolts. godverdommuh.

lol, but after spending almost 100k on your truck i wouldn't cut any edges

Maybe I was dumb and should have just got bolts that fit

You need to order bolts for a SBC solid mount. They are shorter than our stock motor mount bolts and will solve your problem

I just went to the local hardware store & bought grade 8 short bolts..

Correct, and also that gap will "fill in" when the bolt is tightened. Not to worry. Slip a washer in there if you want but I wouldn't bother. PITA

I never used A washer, but what I did do is scrib around the old motor mounts before I took them off, made putting them on super easy.

I got some 4" long 1/2" UNC bolts with nyloc nuts. hmmmm...wonder if the nyloc will melt seeing as the stock mounts had heat shields....

1/2 normal nuts on the way.

BTW There is NO give in the mounts with the 1/2" UNC bolts.

Doubt the nylon will melt, the heat shields on the originals were for the sake of the (soft) rubber pad. I wouldn't change them over that, just booger up the very end of the bolt, or run another nut on there and "lock" them in place. Even if the nylon does melt away the nut won't fall off (but can be removed if ever needed).

There is a steel version of the nyloc nut if yur interested. One end of the nut is deformed to work just like a nyloc. Prolly has a fancy name just don't know what it is. :roll:

good tip Don - are they called FLEXLOC nuts?

FLEXLOC - from UMBRAKO.

I think I'll be ok with the nylocs for now but I'll keep an eye on it.

My mounts are so tight (I need a hammer to get the bolt through) that I prob don't need them anyway! :rotf:

Haven't seen that particular nut but a decent hardware store should have what I'm talking about. Just have to do some searching. As mentioned I don't think it gets hot enough there to hurt a nyloc.

mcmaster carr stocks any bolt/nut/washer you need. all grades, coatings, etc. I order a lot of bolts for personal and work projects and so far I haven't found anything they don't have. mcmaster.com
