This article contains some very good info about the inner workings of the O2 sensor. In addition to tons of info, there was a paragraph that I will sum up as follows:
Oxygen sensors reference the oxygen in the exhaust gas stream to the oxygen in the atmosphere, so they need a source of atmospheric oxygen. In the old days, this was accomplished through a small vent located in the sensor itself. Engineers soon noticed that this vent had a way of plugging with all sorts of crap from the undercar environment. The next development came when the sensor was refined so that the oxygen could enter along the insulation of the sensor wire. Soldering this wire could plug the minute passages with solder, flux and/or melted plastic from the insulation itself.
The bottom line is that they recommend crimping the wire if the standard plug is not available.
Just thought I'd pass that along since I, myself have been guilty of some misinformation by saying, "make a good solder joint at the splice"
