so here's the deal...

i checked with my insurance agent to see if insurance was cheaper and sure enough...it was. it's 200+ less for the same insurance i have for my prelude. so i might be getting a ty if i find a good enough one (for a DD) within the next year or so. i'm still thinking about keeping the lude and going through some (if not all) of college (i plan on majoring in architecture...making the big bucks hopefully) and then getting a ty + DD, but the two options are running through my mind all day, everyday. what do you guys think i should do? :dunno:

first, don't think anything out of college is big bucks
second, sy/tys aren't great daily drivers
third, save your money for beer and bail during college.

You won't save any money driving a Sy/Ty. That $200 you may save on insurance, you will spend 10x in gas and upgrades/maintenance.

That $200 makes me think your insurance company is quoting you for a blazer or a jimmy not a real Ty. My agent needed to see my Ty and verify it was one and the $$ went up up up. Just my :2cents:

i wouldnt sell the prelude and only have the ty. cause when it breaks.. and it will... youre gonna be left with no ride. doug is also correct about the gas... you figure youre gonna go from regular to premium and having a ty youre not going to be able to keep your foot out of it. shit is going to start adding up quick.

my vote is keep the prelude and if want a ty wait till you can afford to have both.

I tried to use my Ty as a daily and I beat the Christ out of it every chance I got and now I am stuck with a motor that i blew the valve covers off of and parts for a new motor waitin to go in and a truck payment on something I cant drive. Not trying to deter you from your goal I just hope to give more perspective.

Re: so here's the deal...

i had a prelude when i first bought my ty. I broke the tranny and spun a bearing in the lude...towed them both on the same day.

keep the lude through college...you'll thank yourself later.

Re: so here's the deal...

no...my agent knew it was a ty. i save $200...that's what i was saying. also, i pay premium for the prelude so that won't change and i don't plan to beat the shit out of the ty. like i said before, i might race acouple (2-3) times a month...depending on the car. the only two things that would change from my prelude to the ty is gas mileage (bad(21/26 - 16/21)) and insurance (good(save 200 bones)) i guess i might just keep the prelude since i can rely on it better...the only bad thing about the lude is trunk space. i have a sub in there (bolted down) that takes up a lot of space. so when i go to college i'll be fu#ked for cargo room.

Ah to be young and naive again.....

Couple of things you need to consider before buying a Ty..

What are you going to do if your truck breaks,or acts stupid? Can you fix it? Do you know somebody that can fix it? Can you afford to fix it?

You can't predict disaster, but you can anticipate risks. Are you willing to walk to school? Do you want a finicky vehicle that NOBODY knows how to work on? Have you considered the worst case scenario and how you would deal with it?

I can understand your unrequited lust for a mighty stoplight warrior, but I gotta welcome you to reality so that you understand that life isn't about "what if", (What if it all works out? and I don't get ****ed)
it's more about having a plan and being prepared and able to deal with whatever happens.

You need to focus on school and a good career first.Everything else is secondary. You can have a cool ride when you got it going on.No need to rush.

If insurance costs and gas milage are a big consideration for you to be able to afford the important stuff (like food/place to sleep) then a syty should be right up there with a $500 a day coke habit on your list of important things to have.

Re: so here's the deal...

Only going to race 2-3 times per month? Only takes once to break and you dont have to be racing to do it.

My first trans in the Sy broke while pulling out of a parking spot. I was doing 7mph.

The Sy blew out a waterpump gasket just last week and left me in a dark parking lot to fix it at night. I was picking up my daughter and just driving. (other factors involved with the breakage, but besides the point, it broke leaving me stranded for awhile)

Look at the new post just made about the lower trans line coming loose while driving at highway speed and now leaving the owner with a potential full rebuild.

CVs arent to uncommon to have to replace...dont need to race to break those.

My Ty just busted the boost vac line to my pillar gauge by accident when it got under the dash on the E-brake lever and busted it open. Minor breakage, still driveable, but just another thing to add to the list to fix. The Ty NEVER gets raced.. all show.

I own a Acura TSX, Sy, Ty, and soon a 65 GMC shortbed

The TSX is the daily driver. No rocket science on why.
