Smallest tow rig?

Ive got a 03 ranger 4.0L V6 4X4. And im questioning its ability to tow the Typhoon. I think it would be fine pulling the rear shaft and using a dolly. but i rather use a full size. whats the smallest truck/car anyones towed a ty with.

Re: Smallest tow rig?

Christian towed his Sy from Orlando to the Nats twice behind a S-Series Blazer.
while its not recommended it can be done.

I think your ranger would do ok with a dolly but I wouldn't put a full float behind it.
Not enough brakes to make me feel safe.

ok just kidding. that was about 3.5 tons all said and done. I took it down the interstate for about 5 miles to the next exit to get a tire fixed on the bobcat. Gets up to speed, but with 4 wheel disc, it still took time to slow on down. Scary shit!

Re: Smallest tow rig?

I towed Ty 0740 using a Uhaul Tow dolly and my 2wd lowered S-10 with a 4.3! The hitch for the tow dolly was literally 8" off the ground! The truck was just a shell but I will say that was one scarry ride home!! Didn't help that we hit a blizzard along the way either! I almost had that thing in the wall 2 different times while on the way home.

Re: Smallest tow rig?

i towed a 4door bazer on a dolley w/ a extended cab 4x4 ranger and will never try that again. i only went four miles but the blazer would push the ranger through the brakes every time

Re: Smallest tow rig?

i used my 92 jimmy to tow the 3500 lb sy, plus 1500 lb trailer plus 1000 lb of my shit, and had no problems.

i used a u-haul trailer with surge brakes. my jimmy had 98+ front and rear discs. had plenty of brakes, even under panic stop's

the key to using a smaller tow vehiecle is proper placement on the trailer.

if i put the sy all the way forward like u-haul want's, it looked like the jimmy was doing a boost-launch!! :rotf:

I towed my project Syclone from Ft. Meyers FL, to Los Angeles with my 93 S Blazer, no problems. I used a tow bar arrangement that I have for dinghy-towing my T10 Pick up.

S-series much?

I really liked my crew. Kinda wish I would've held onto it and modified it to make it do what I want instead of spending the cash to upgrade to the Yukon. Anyway, I'll post a picture of it hauling around my Xtreme when I get home. If I hadn't listened to Jeff, and moved the truck back on the trailer a little it would've not looked so damn goofy. I was a newbie to towing at the time and didn't know any better!

I personally think for the weight of a Ty on an open trailer, I'd be happiest in a 1/2 ton pickup or SUV, or something larger. Anything less will become some serious white knuckle affairs if the conditions are anything but ideal.

Re: Smallest tow rig?

I used a full size chevy with a 4.3l to tow an 87 Buick T-Type from Philadelphia to Utah on a full trailer. I think I managed about 45mph avg through Wyoming against the wind.

Re: Smallest tow rig?

i towed the syclone full weight to the drag strip on a full trailer with my 06 ranger 4.0 5psd(auto) 4x4.....it has 4.10s so its got power from the factory and it stopped okay except for the steep downgrade..if i had to i would do it again

Re: Smallest tow rig?

My 87 s-blazer will be used to tow my other 87 s-blazer when needed. Thats only a couple times a year though. More that that probably wouldnt be good.

A friend of mine towed his 69 camaro drag car everywhere with his 4 door 98 s10 blazer. He said he never had a problem. Said it had plenty of power to cruise down the interstate with. Stopping might have been another story though, I never asked.

Re: Smallest tow rig?

Put many miles on the trailer with SY on top with my GMC Canyon but I have the off road package that adds to towing capabilities.

I also towed the SoGT with an S-Jimmy... just have to use some common sense and prepare for stops.

Re: Smallest tow rig?

my dad towed his 19.5 ft fiberglass boat with a 350 in it, with my Noma GT (in4.3 fashion) all the way to Peublo (aprox 60 miles). It was a scary ass ride. Damn boat was way bigger than the truck, but we made it there and back
