Smaller booster

sy in progress
While pulling some parts from a 91 4 banger S10, I noticed that the brake booster is much thinner than the ones in Syclones/Typhoons. Take a look:

http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/s...year=1991&make=Chevrolet&model=S10&vi=1060782

Specifically, this one:

http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/d...=Search_01305_1060782_3966&pt=01305&ppt=C0066

Now since I'm not running the usual vacuum suspects (A/C vents, cruise control), I'm wondering if I could swap this one in to clean things up a bit. The only concern I have is the length of the plunger rod not being the same.

Anybody tried this, or would I be the guinea pig?

Re: Smaller booster

If you were going to bother to change it, I'm sure you could find something smaller.

I know some of the S10 guys use Geo Metro boosters. A lot more room for swaps that way.

Re: Smaller booster

Yeah, but with a hydroboost, you have an octopus of lines coming off of it. I'd rather go with an EPS system from either an MR2 or Volvo.

Use the lines from a 83 malibu wagon diesel factory looking install

(Both from 83 Malibu wagon Diesel)
Gates Part Numbers
Pump to Hydroboost 356430
Hydroboost to Gear 356470

Yep, I went the manual brake route several years ago and have NO booster at all :).

If you decide to go this route, check out the tips of those that have gone before you here. HTH's

Re: Smaller booster

So... what (if any) are the downsides to hydroboost setups?

-P

extremely sensitive brakes I know I have read about over and over again in here. "weird" pedal travel is another. After speaking with some owners on here who have done the hydroboost swaps, I for one will stick with vacuum brakes.

If you aren't meticulous during the install and you have a line blow off, you are going to have a MAJOR fire right now . And things get *really* tight if you are running headers... I bought a hydroboost from a boneyard years ago until I went with the "less is more" mindset. Who knows, I still may use it someday. A true syty is always under construction, be it for maintenance, repairs or modifications .

Mike, what's the pedal effort like with the manual brakes?

Well, it takes a little getting used to. The pedal effort to stop the truck is linear would be the easiest way to describe it... Unlike power brakes where the pedal gets *really* firm during the last half inch or so of pedal travel. That is when you can really lock them up in you have to with power brakes. I find that after I drive my truck for a bit, I end up braking sooner since it's more difficult to come to a "quick stop" if I have to.

When my buddy first converted his truck, he didn't change the brake pedal over to manual brakes. I had a difficult time stopping his truck when I drove it. Thought that I was going to break his seat off the tracks trying to push the brake pedal through the firewall...

Re: Smaller booster

We've been dabbling with some options in this department as well. The stock brake booster in a syty is 11 3/4 inches in diameter. Just huge, especially when you start removing things in the engine bay. In doing the brembos on the shop sy, and cleaning up the engine bay, we started exploring options. I'm not a huge fan of hydroboost do to the modulation and with monster brakes, I wanted better modulation and a cleaner install. We found a few options and got a couple to test, 8" and 9" booster, dual diaphragm, powedercoated black, with adjustable rods to dial in the pedal and bolt in to the fire wall and stock master. Lophonies project syclone got the proto 8" booster, you can see it in his build pics:http://www.syty.net/forums/showthread.php?t=87906&highlight=lophonie&page=6

I'm personally going to try the 9" dual diag, with the brembos and wilwood billet master and proportioning valve.

We have since set up an account with these guys and can offer the boosters at a very reasonable cost, around $120 ish. We have also found that the first gen s10's, with the smaller motors, 4cyl, 2.8, etc have a much smaller booster, but I haven't verified if its single or dual diaphragm or what side the piston is in the master.
