side exit exhaust?

Re: side exit exhaust?

i would think ground clearance would be an issue, but maybe not. Depends how low you sit, and if you are going thru or under the frame rail and cladding.

Re: side exit exhaust?

The truck I just purchased has a "side exit" type exhaust that comes out in front of the rear tire. I don't like it at all......looks to cheap on these trucks. I'll dig up some photos so you can see for your self!

If I recall correctly there is 1 Calif Ty with side exhaust on here with a picture or two of it. I look around for it.

Re: side exit exhaust?

I have side exhaust, cat but no muffler. A bit loud but sounds good to me. I'll get a pic up late this afternoon. I like the location but I can also see why folks don't like it either.

i think a guy in fl made a bunch "maybe a gp" for sys and said they could not be done on tys with modding the cladding

I can't find the pictures of the Ty, If I recall correctly steve-o posted them when the owner stop by for a visit after getting a RPM short block. It seem to me that the owner use rectangle tubing or a early model Z-28 exhaust outlet just in front of the back tires. I think the Ty was white on white.

I'M DOING IT.
At first I wanted to go through the frame, but than I had to cut some holes through and replumbing al gas lines which is serious work but now I go under the frame.
Still fitting and planning it all with elbows and 416 stainless pipes
From the 3" ATR downpipe through a 3"cat it goes to a collector divider 3"in 2x 2 1/2 "out through a magnaflow mufler to either side of the truck with a 3" exit in front of both rear wheels.
underneath all with V-band clambs so I can pull the cat with ease and put a direct elbow on it so it has a high flow and lots of noise

Most difficult is to get enough clearance under the trucks frame and still don't hit the street and to replace your hangings the right way.

Re: side exit exhaust?

...Dabney C. was the first to do a side exhaust in a Ty. He went below the frame (not cutting into it with a hole or cutting cladding).
You may ask him for details, but I believe he had a few issues (hung low, noise/reverberation, cladding
staining, outer support, etc). Dont quote me on this however, as my memory isnt what it used to be and
I have not caught up with Dabney in a long time but he's an awfully good guy to ask this question to.

Of course only one side (passenger side) has the exhaust outlet...but there are ways to make
it look like a dual tip at that point.

I am working on that as well.

Need to keep in mind about the angle of the muffler/exhaust tips as if you end up blowing a head gasket or something goes wrong you don't want it puking out over your back wheel

i'd also be weary of the heat melting the not-cheap-to-replace cladding

Re: side exit exhaust?

I was going to make mine go out the side, but I didn't want to go under the frame. I thought it would look nice, but thought it would present problems of its own. I have enough tubing left over, and a v-band at the end of the test pipe, so I could make one up to bypass any muffler at all. Right now, I have just one muffler behind the trans cross member. Eventually, I'll probably put a resonator in place of the test pipe... at least make it look eco-friendly.

If I get a streak of procrastination on the rest of the stuff I have to do this weekend on the ty, perhaps I'll whip one up. If I do, perhaps 2.5 years later, I'll take pictures for the next time someone starts this thread.
