3783lbs with me in the driver seat. Shoot off ideas you guys have for shedding 618lbs without touching the interior except for race seats. Project truck is a 2nd generation 4wd S10 regular cab turned Awd with an all aluminum 5.7L LS1. Crate motor weighed 430lbs complete with wiring harness and short tube headers, which shed about 70-80lbs off the front after the weigh in. 3708lbs now. Passenger gas tank removed and 13 gallon aluminum fuel cell placed in the spare tire location. I figure that's about 100lbs moved rearward and 30lbs total removed. 3678lbs. For the gas tank to be there, the spare tire was ditched, removing 45lbs (full size 235/70R15 and steel rim). 3633lbs. QA1 coilovers, and torsion bars plus crossmember removed, about 65lbs. 3568lbs. Corbeau racing seats swapped out for bucket seats, center console remains. 30-40lbs removed due to the power 8 way adjustable seats. 3533lbs. Tow hooks, skid plates and steel driveshaft replaced with aluminum, maybe 30lbs. 3503lbs. 4x4 tires and aluminum swirlies replaced with 17" and 18" aluminum rims wrapped in Nitto rubber. No change in total weight.

I'm still too heavy! What else can I do? Basic goal is to get this truck deep into the low 12's all motor.

Ditch the ABS.Take off the TC dust shield.Get a mini starter and smaller battery.Take out the inner fenders.

What do those Optima dry cell batteries weight? and they can be mounted anywhere(even upsidedown)

Is there anyway to replace the rear leaf springs with coilovers?

Carbon fiber drive shafts, front and rear.

How much do the bumpers weight? :p

15" welds and drs shaved 80# of rotating mass for me.

Didn't see glass leaf springs or rear coils, another place to go.
Odyssey battery.

Great idea here, that was actually my next purchase. Looking for a simple 2" cowl hood and found one made of fiberglass on eBay. Any idea on how much weight the hood will shave off?

Forgot to mention that the battery is in the bed, it's a small #25 model Optima red top battery meant for Civics, only weighs 31lbs according to the bathroom scale and it puts out plenty of power. There's no sound system anyway except for the a cheap deck and door speakers. ...no those aren't being taken out. :)

ABS is also getting ditched next, right after I change the front brakes to the big brakes off 98+ S-trucks with the dual piston calipers and larger rotors. Should be worth another 30-40lbs off the front from the ABS module gone but the larger calipers negate that weight loss I'd bet. And yes brakes are worth the extra weight.

Ideally a 50/50 weight distribution would be my goal but in a sport truck that's damn near impossible so I'll settle for 55/45, better than stock 60/40 anyways. The motor isn't as far back as it could on the mounts, so with a little massaging of the firewall I could push the motor/trans/t-case back another 3/4"-1" but then I'll need to shorten the rear driveshaft and lengthen the front. :(

I don't know about Typhoon, but Syclone are 70/30, I would guess Ty's are closer to 65/35.

2nd generation S-series trucks are heavier due to their stronger ladder type frame along with more safety features. I'm looking to get rid of a few of these crossmembers, especially around the back half under the bed.

I just took the past hour or so to read that long 10 page thread about putting the truck on a diet. I think I have enough to go on now to shed the extra 500lbs I need. Really only 335lbs off the truck. Looking for a 3000lb weight truck +/- without me.

Abs removal isnt worth 30-40#. Realistically like 20#. Hood is worth around 20-25#

You can get the weight down with a fiberglass hood, but it comes at a price. Most fiberglass hoods are as heavy or heavier than the stocker. So don't assume just because it's fiberglass, it will be lighter. I wanted ultra light weight and this is what I got (yes, that is light that you can see shining through):

At high speed, it "flaps" like crazy and I'm sure that my paint will suffer eventually flex agent or not.

Newer 2nd gen ABS modules are quite a big larger than SyTy units, especially since the one I'd get rid of has a built in P-valve. I'll weigh it when I take it out.

rinkrat, awesome work so far. I'm also building a later model truck and was somewhat concerned with the total weight. I don't know my base weight right now because it hasen't moved under its own power in awhile and i have no scales in our shop.

Mines a reg cab 2wd 4.3L turbo though..

Do you have any pics of how you mounted the fuel cell under the bed or which tank etc? I have a 16 gallon plastic fuel cell i was just going to mount in the bed but i would really like to keep the bed clean if possible. I already have a small tank and pump in the bed for the alky injection though.
