Setting Timing

Not sure if I asked this before, but in the haynes manual for our trucks, it just says "set timing according to manf intructions", anyone know what this may be? I have been trying to trace a misfire for a LONG time, and just changed the distributer... I know that I need to set the timing now.. if anyone can assist, please lemme know..

Re: Setting Timing

Easiest is with a shallow well 9/16 whatever you do don't take it all the way out. If you do its a pita to get it on a totally stock truck. loosen it a good amount so you can twist it thats all. good luck

Re: Setting Timing

I wish you could see how torn up my hands are from changing the distributor last weekend! I look like I got attacked by a cat! What a pain in the ass!

I used a shallow 9/16 socket with a swivel and a long extension to get the bolt. Its easier to get if you have an EGR delete or remove the EGR valve. Definitely has to be re-timed if it was out.

X 2 on distributor wrench. Removing the cap will make it a little easier also ! Jus label all your wires and use a sharpee and mark cap 1 thru 6.

Are you sure they didn't get a couple of plug wires swapped? It shouldn't run 'horrible' with the timing off a bit.

Re: Setting Timing

We get the bolt loose, and I am very sorry for the silly ??'s, but what mark on the balancer am I looking for, there is a slot cut in it, and with the est wire disconnected it runs very very poor when lined up with that, there is also a chalk mark sideways on the balancer, and when I have that centered inbetween the marks it seemed to idle great, but when I drove her last night I was getting tons of "ping" and she would idle for more than 5 minutes, also had an intermittent misfire, gues you would kinda have to hear it, but if I could type it... vvrrrrrrrrrrrrskipvrrrrrrrskipskipvrrrrrrrrrrskip.... you get the idea... if that chalk mark is the correct mark, should the begining of it be at 0 or ?? I know I could just go the trail and error route, or pull plug 1 and check tdc myself, but it's such a pain to get that bolt loose, kinda hoping for a lil more info before I keep going... :) thanks so much for your replies......

Did they have time to charge you?

Do you have time to pay them?

WTF, thats like buying new tires and once they get them installed, they run out of air.

Re: Setting Timing

I would reset tdc with the groove on the pulley. Then there is no question about it being wrong. People always set the dist in wrong and make there own marks.

Do it right and the rewards are awsome:tup:

Re: Setting Timing

Disconnect battery, remove distributor cap, remove your serpentine belt, fan shroud anything else in your way.

Put a socket on center nut in harmonic balancer use a 1/2 set( Ratchet -sockets) if you got them.It may or may not be diffficult (spark plugs still in engine) Turn it clock wise and look for line (groove) on balancer.

Once line (groove) on balancer moves into notch -look at rotor ( It should be pointed aligned with number 1 terminal in cap. ( put cap on to check) .

There are 2 lines on our balancers. ( I forget which is the correct one)

You might need to this a couple of times while watching rotor and marks on balancer to feel comfortable with this method.

If the mark on the balancer is lined up (in notch) and the rotor in the cap is facing backwards (pointed at back of truck)You may be 360 out.

If you are 360 out loosen hold down and reposition rotor to align with number 1 in cap.

Any experts please feel free to point out any errors.

Re: Setting Timing

Ok, timing set, there was a chalk mark that somone had drawn on the crank pulley, that lined up with tdc on comp stroke... we set dist #1 to that, pulled est wire, started, timed to 0* tdc, started great... idles awsome, connected est wire, still great.... but now I have a check engine light and upon acceleration feels like someone is turning ignition on and off, like boost cut or fuel cut, but at real low rpm and load.... and when I try to jumper the diag port, my door locks click and no flash.......

Re: Setting Timing

For some reason after disconnecting battery for a few days I re-connected, and the computer gave me a code 45... I ran some fuel cleaner through the tank and she runs a hell of alot better... still skipping here and there, stalling once in a while, but overall she'll kill any honda out there

Re: Setting Timing

Ok quick question. Im attempting to get to my dis bolt right now to set my timing. I have my dis wrench on what feels like a bolt right up under the number six on the dis cap but Im afraid to put a lot of twist on it till I know for sure that this is it..is it?

the 9/16 fits this bolt to btw.

ok, ok. I know this horse has probably been ridden into the ground.......
I'm coming up from the head gaskets. I set the tolerance on the rocker arms @ .20.(?) I am now at trying to set the timing. From reading, I need to go under the dash and disconnect the tan wire next? I have a bold white stripe and 3" to the right is the other unpainted dash. My dist isnt in yet. Am I on the right track?
