Gage is a variant of gauge according to various sources. Still not cool.

I also work in manufacturing and calibrate gauges for a living, I've seen it spelled both ways. I do remember a debate going in college with my instructor and the English department on the correct spelling.

I cut metal and when it comes back marked "to short" it makes me feel stupid for working with these imbiciles.

Because it can't be made longer?
Because you can't read a tape measure?
Or because it should be 'too short'?

We had/have a manager at work who has the worst grammar/writing skills. It's more his combining 12 thoughts into one sentence but I always look forward to reading what he has to say :D

Skidoo is a brand name not a hobby.

Lots of things develop like that. Playing foot-bag for example is referred to as playing Hacky (Hackey) sack. Using a Crescent wrench is really using an adjustable wrench.
In my trade it can get especially confusing when 1 certain type of support can have 5 different names depending on what part of the country/world you are from.
