Selling something used, how long for money back return?

I sold a used Ultimate Radar chip over a year ago for $150 shipped. I was just PM'd and was told its not working and he wants his money back. I never tried the chip in mine and bought it used from user TurboT. Normally I'd offer his money back if it was around 30 days but a year is pushing it. I have no idea where its been sitting or whats been done to it over this year. I want to be fair so what should I do? If you guys think I should give back him his money back, then thats what I'll do.

I agree a year is a bit on the edge for a used part. $150 for the radar style is cheap from what others are selling for.

Got any details on what isn't "working"? Can it be fixed, is the user sure it was installed right?

I say no. Coming back a year later after you buy a part and wanting your money back is a bit ridiculous.

Personally, I think 30 days is more than sufficient time to offer a refund IF an item proves faulty. I have stuff I have purchased from members on here that is still boxed up (never even opened to check for apparent damage) and most of it is older than 30 days. I would never ask for a refund on those items in any circumstance seeing it would be my fault I never opened the boxes and tested the item(s).

You asked for opinions...here's mine; you don't owe the buyer anything but a kind response to relay your empathy for him . A year is waaaayyyy to long to voice a complaint.

I agree a year is a little long to be asking for anything.
30 days is about the max I would stand behind anything much less something electronic like a chip that can be damaged by something as simple as static electricity.

And not too mention at $150 he got a smokin' deal on it!

As with any electronics even if I plan on not installing it for awhile I typically pull it out and connect it to make sure its up to par.

No way. 1 year is way too long. If you want to be nice you could help him determine why it's "broken"

Usually when I buy a used parts, I assume it is " as is" with no refunds unless there is something blatantly wrong with it at the time of purchase. Buyer beware, ya know?

The two major issues is it has been a year, AND it is an electrical part. Most autoparts stores do not take returns on electrical parts -and they are purchased new.

Playing the devils advocate, how do you know this guy is not switching his previously owned bad part for your part you sold to him? Hey it's possible. How do you know he did not properly do the install (eg static precautions, disconnect the battery etc) and burn it up??

This is the negative side of buying new or used parts and putting them way until you have a chance to install them. Hell, sometimes even new parts are out of warranty because they sit in the garage for a long time and most stores go by the sales receipt date to start the warranty period.

Just the fact that it has been a year is enough to decline any request for refund.

Hopefully he will understand and have no hard feelings. Good luck with it.

Thanks for all the input!

I'm not exactly sure whats wrong with it. He mentioned the toggle switch not working and the rear cover is missing. Heck, after a year, I don't even remember what it looks like, let alone if it had a rear cover.

Here's the PM's:

Hey Shawn-
I installed your chip I bought from you today and the toggle switch does not work on it. I cannot change the settings. What happened to the rear cover of it?

This has been over a year, I can barely remember it. I never installed it on my truck and purchased it from TurboT and never bothered to look closely at it.
What cover is missing? Did you follow the instructions from the website?
If you cant get it to work, what would you like me to do?
Buyer said:
Shawn I can't use it if it does not work. I have been sitting on it for a year never thinking to check it out cause I already have a pillar type in the typhoon. I was going to use this one in my jeep after installing the stock motor. How about I send it back to you for a refund? I'll try to get it to work after I dial in the new ty motor. You should talk to Turbo T about it.

I'm not sure if it can be fixed or not. If its just the toggle switch, I would think you could replace it. Again, I just want to be fair about this. I just think a year is too long to come back and want a full refund.

Thanks everyone!

He should have noticed the back was missing when he received it a year ago. Now that a year has passed, that is way too much time for you to be liable. 30 days at most I can understand to an extent, but this is way way too long. Tell him sorry but all you can do is give him your sympathy and................

HAVE A NICE DAY!!! :rotf:

On my Ultimate, it doesn't have a rear cover. The switch probably doesn't have anything with it not working. Its probably a wiring issue or display chip issue.

If its in good shape I will buy it and fix it.

Re: Selling something used, how long for money back return?

Have him contact Todd A at www.sytychips.com about sending it in for repair.
I have had Todd update and upgrade 3 or 4 different setups over the years and it has never been much of a cost or hassle to deal with him directly.

I believe Todd is no longer producing the units but he may still have enough spare parts to repair it.

Give him the info he needs to do his due diligence and be done.
No way I would even consider a partial refund considering how long ago the transaction happened.
Too long and too much could have happened in that time frame.

That's why I hate even selling used parts anywhere but ebay.
Most buyers want to beat every nickle out of you then bitch when its not perfect.

Great info! I PM'd the buyer some of the comments here and told him to contact Todd. I also mentioned that someone would be willing to buy and fix it so you may get a PM dgoodhue. I'm glad I posted this thread because I was about ready to just send a refund because thats the way I am. I'm very fair and honest when it comes to selling stuff.

If dgoodhue is will to buy it for the $150, then it seems everybody comes out where they want.

known working should bring $250+ anyways. Or seems that is what history shows.

I agree. I paid 185 shipped from TurboT so I already lost some money on it. I also included a 3 bar map sensor. Hopefully it all works out in the end. I asked the buyer to post here if he doesn't agree.

Re: Selling something used, how long for money back return?

Yeah I have had the unit stored for almost a year and never bothered to try it out until I tried on my new motor in my typhoon here a couple of days ago. I remember receiving the chip w/ the rear cover missing & thinking I'm sure it works fine & did not bother checking since Rodent was not a newbie or anything.
The display works & the truck did start with it installed. The key locking mechanism does not unlock to change the settings. I think it is stripped or something. Judging by the cover missing it looks as someone else was aware of the problem & was trying to fix it.

Did you buy yours used too

? There *should* be a cover on the back since it helps to keep anything from getting inside the case and causing "problems"... Here's what the back of mine looks like:

This thread reminded me that I could take it out of my truck since I won't be doing anymore testing/proofing for Todd A. since as Loeryder mentioned both the 10n1 and Ultimate chip has been discontinued.

You can contact Todd A. in the link that Loeryder posted above however, don't get your hopes up. Trying to troubleshoot a used chip can be a nightmare and he may not have the parts and/or time to address it.
