So as I write this from mt crackberry, Jeff scott (and family) and I are on our way to the Run through The Hills 2011 event in Pigeon Forge,TN this weekend. It will have an auto-x, speed-stop challenge, and 1/4-mile challenge.

It looks to be a great time and I hope that I might see more of my syty bretheren if they can make it. If its anyhing like the Day At the Strip event we did earlier this summer, it will be a blast! Kid-friendly!

Look for the TTV8Ty and we will be there!

Re: Run through the hills 2011

I made it a goal of mine now that my typhoon is mostly done to put it through several different racing events. It started last year with the open road course in texas, earlier this year I did the day at the strip put on by Bowler, and as of last weekend the Run Through the Hills event in Pigeon Forge TN.

Having been around the syty world for awhile now, 14yrs I think. Making sure my lawn chair doesn't move away from the cooler has somewhat lost its thrill to be honest. I enjoy drag racing greatly, but why not push my trucks envelope further and me as a driver in other directions.

First off thanks to Alex for tagging along to be my pit crew. It is so much easier in the events to have a helper and Alex pulled through. From changing spark plugs, a bit of tuning, camera on/off, etc.

For those that sat home and did nothing this weekend you missed a great event. Yesterday I saw them give away ~$4k in gift cards and a set of custom Forgeline Rims another $4k in value. (my ticket was one frickin number off).

There are 3 racing events, autocross, drag racing, and speed/stop. (1/8 mile race but you must stop within 40 ft after finish line)

The only real rule they have is a 200 thread wear or higher rating tire. Which for me sucked as I have 180. You can still run just not eligible for prizes and awards (this turned out to suck badly for me as you will see).

Saturday was Autocross. Having never done this before in my truck I was not sure how it would turn out. Lets just say I had a great time, didn't take out a single cone and put what I would say were respectable times. 54 seconds best lap for me. Event best lap was 45 and that was what I would call a full race prep c5 corvette. My times were right there with most of the people.

Sunday was drag racing/speed stop.

My best drag in 1/8th was 7.4 (the winner of event was 7.6 being I was disqualified).
GRRRRR

For speed stop I ran an 8.9, (winner of event was 8.8). Now with this said I had burnt a spark plug wire during drag race so did this event on 7 cylinders. Even with that my time would have netted me 2nd place (and a significant gift card).

Along with the speed/stop they did a top speed via radar gun. I do not know my times, but the winner averaged 78-80mph. Being I ran 92mph in 1/8th earlier I suspect I would have placed well there also.

I did walk away with a $250 gift card for mustang parts (good thing my brother has a mustang).

I will be back next year, and most likely with tires to conform to the rules.

Hopefully the rest of you guys that made sure the couch didn't move this weekend had fun.

Re: Run through the hills 2011

Congrats Jeff (and Alex as well). I fully expected you to place near or at the top in each event. IMO, you have one of the fastest Typhoons I have ever been in and looking at the pics, if you stiffen up the suspension, I would guess your autoX times could drop 1.5-2 seconds. On the other hand, if you would learn to drive, it could drop your time 3-4 seconds (ha).

Way to represent. Wanted to come support you but was just there the week prior for the Fall Rod Run and stuff needed tended to here.

You can rest assured, I fully intend to join you guys next year at the event I missed earlier this year.

Re: Run through the hills 2011

awesome.. Jeff i agree i enjoy pushing these trucks in more than just the 1/4mi but my truck is to slow to do anything impressive.. however it sure as hell handles better thanks to all the new parts..

where the tire requirements posted before the event? or did you want to avoid spending $700 in new tires?

Re: Run through the hills 2011

Wanted to avoid $1200 in new tires. If you look our 17" tire combination has VERY few in the 200+ TW ratings.

BFG offers contigency monies also for winning events, but so far that will force me to change rims. Just debating on that cost vs benefit to do that. Then of course what do I go with.

Re: Run through the hills 2011

Found more pictures.

I have some good videos also I hope to be able to edit and post at some point. I've determined my rear suspension is not working out so bad.

The nose is buried due to trying to go from 80mph to zero and get stopped inside the box which is 40ft in length.

I promise you I won every drag race, including this one. Amazed it looked this close in the picture. I believe this was the first run and as Alex can say we spun for a LONG time. Once it caught I put several car lengths on every car I ran.

That's looks awesome. You summed it up very well. Sitting at a show in a lawn chair just doesn't compare to getting out and driving what you've built. What are you running for calipers/rotors? abs?

Hey Jeff this was good reading despite the rule on tires U and Team surely had a great time, this kind´s of event we miss over here, they never tie this autox with DR and autocross (Ralley?) and hill, its all separated never to go toghether.. :(

Next year U will clean the tabels with prizes..

Re: Run through the hills 2011

Well, I would like to add a few things to what Jeff has written!

When Jeff told me he was going to enter the RTTH event, I was half-tempted to also jump in. My timing was not good, as I have cratered the V6 and registration fort this event was closed rather quickly. I offered to come out and help Jeff out with whatever little crap he may need. Sometimes its good to have someone else around to do the menial tasks (pit bitch)! Having already done this event (not the Auto-X), I had a good idea of what to expect. To be honest, I wanted to see how our trucks (Typhoon specifically) could compete in the auto-x events alongside purpose-built cars. After Jeff and I did the Day At The Strip event, I was a bit more intrigued than I let off.

The auto-x event went fairly smoothly. Jeff seemed to get faster with every pass he took, shaving a couple tenths here and there. Watching it from the sidelines, it looked very subdued. Sitting in the passenger's seat was a little different. The truck handled itself very capably. We had a few things to sort out in the tune that would not have really ever presented itself if not pushing the truck in that fashion, but Jeff and I saw a few small things to clear up. The truck did great, and after 6 laps we called it a day. While Jeff wasn't in the TOP 10 (ranged from 45.X sec to 50.X sec), he wasn't far off the pack (many others much slower than he was).

That evening there was a dinner put on by the show promoters at THE TOY BOX (a shop one of the promoters owned). Their spread was incredible! a redneck margarita machine (converted 2-stroke weed wacker engine mated to a blender - complete with handle bars) processing moonshine, fresh bruchetta, 14-oz New York Strip steaks on the grill, pasta salads, regular salads, and some other stuff as well. Almost all of the competitors came out and had a great time.

The following morning we went to the track and started tweaking a bit. Jeff made a few 1/8th mile pulls while we collected data. It was shortly after this time we found a bad #2 plug wire. It coincided with a few things we were seeing in the $59 data. We went searching for a replacement in the trailer, but there was none to be found. The truck still ran a best of 7.43 @ 92mph with a bad plug wire. After this was the speed stop challenge. Jeff did very well in that also, but came in second (if it would have counted) by 0.10 sec - easy to overcome with a solid-running truck.

The event was amazing. A good time was had by all. Lots of very interesting people from all walks. They were eager to talk about Jeff's Typhoon since many have never really seen one in action before. The sponsors gave away a TON of schwag! Contingency monies were also given to winners promoting sponsored products. Just flat-out awesome.

As we drive back, Jeff and I talked about all kinds of things related to this series of events. I think we both felt reinvigorated in competing once more with our vehicles. This shows the overall potential of a vehicle - not just straight-line performance. It would be wise for other members here to look into these types of events - you have NO IDEA WHAT YOU'RE MISSING!!

Here's a few pics for now....video to follow later...and YES ALL THESE VEHICLES WERE RACING!!

C5 front calipers, 13" rotors.

Rear is just stock ls1 disc brakes nothing fancy at all.

ABS deleted and all new lines run, not a single stock line remains.

If you go back next year , a few more sytys should join you .A possibility to be on tv would be nice. I see hydroboost units on a few different cars , was it a common mod from what you saw ?

Re: Run through the hills 2011

I saw it on a few, I heard 1 person talk about how hard it was to control. ON/OFF vs pedal feel.

That was 1 person. I don't use hydro so have no opinion.
