Rolled fillet crank. Anyone found one yet?

Ok, heres some info i found out by doing some checking in the alternative catalog on Gm parts Direct. I looked up the crank for a stock 93' GMC Jimmy, they didnt list Ty, and for engine code W it showed part number 10224880, showed to be still available for 433.03, and under vin Z and all other V6 part number 10224877, which is also in the GM performance parts book, listed as a stock cast crank used in all 86+ 4.3L engines, and it shows to be available for 449.45. I then looked up 99 and later GMC jimmy, and for, 99-02 it showed all V6 engine using crank part number 12558256, which showed available for 424.54, all crank show about 85 bucks worth of shipping and handling, which puts the total price just over 500 bucks. Im thinking of ordering the newer crank to see it ifs a rolled fillet crank but im afraid it wont be, as i had a crank out of a 99 Blazer vin code W, that i recently sold and it didnt have the rolled fillets, it had undercut fillets, at the edge of the bearing surface it was a little thinner then it went in the counterweight part of the crank, and i also checked the crank in my stock 92 CPI from my GT and its the same as the 99 i had, so im not sure, can anybody get there hads on this new crank to see if its the real deal or not?

every stock crank I've seen has rolled fillets. I've got an 85, 88,89,90,91,92,93,94,95,96

i was given a core 4.3 motor for rebuild and it DOES have a rolled fillet crank . the motor was from a 1987 full size chevy truck. i am a Buick guy and i have ran both Rolled Fillet (turbo) cranks and non turbo cranks in a lot of Buick motors i rebuilt . i have the non turbo crank motors running mid to low 11s and still staying together . the key to keeping any turbo motor together is DO NOT ALLOW THE MOTOR TO DETONATE  Turbo crank or not it will not last with knock . If anyone has any idea on how to obtain the part# for that marine engine nodular crank, please share.

If I can get a part #, I might have a chance at getting a price on it.

Ok these are two write ups from the SAE Technical Paper Series.

The first one is from paper #910682 called "The Turbo/Intercooler Syclone Engine"

"Crankshaft - The Nodular iron crankshaft has a 30 degree crankpin splay for even fire and 57.2mm (2.25") diameter crankpins. The fillets are deep rolled to maximize fatigue strength. Optimization of the crankshaft design for strength and bearing performance is described in the reference (1) SAE paper on the original 4.3L engine."

The Second write up is from paper #920676 called " General Motors High Performance 4.3L V6 Engine" This is the L35 motor.

"Crankshaft - The Crankshaft is similar to the nodular iron crank used in the base and Syclone engines except for balance. It is designed for even fire with 30 degree crankpin splays. The crankpin diameters were increased to 57.2mm(2.25")from the smallblock V8 53.3mm(2.1") to provide adequate strenght in the "football" section between adjacent crankpins. Develpment of the crankshaft, including the fillet deep rolling process, is described in reference (1). The additional loading for the L35 due to the higher BMEP (+13%) and engine operating speed range (4800 to 5600 rpm) increased crankpin fillet stresses slightly relative to the base engine. Alternating stress safety factors from the goodman diagram were within a conservative range and no crankshaft structural enhancement were deemed necessary. The analysis has been substantiated by a comprehensive dynamometer and vehicle engine validation program with zero crankshaft fatigue failures."

Hope this gives you guys some insight in to the stock crank. The number for the SAE paper on the base 4.3L V6 is #841225.

Looks like, from the info nolan shared, any 86+ 4.3L crankshaft is going to be sufficient..........

10224877 86+ 4.3L

I did just get an email about another syty that had 10055480 in his stock engine. But if all the 86+ are nodular rolled fillet than there shouldn't be any problem finding one.

It would be interesting to see where we can get the best deal on 10224877 brand new. Gmpartsscrewsuonshippingdirect.com has them for $453.50.... then total is .... $544.20.

I don't know what it costs to get a crank magnafluxed, turned down, etc..
But it might end up being within a hundred or 2 for a brand new one, if we can find a good source.

Beats me about the pics but I have a marine long block coming in in a week or so so I can pull the casting number of the crank

Hope Im not embarassing myself here but my machine shop told me, when I asked about these, htat they really arent that big a deal. Just what I was told, have NO proof.

I've heard that tossed around as well... I'm just going to compare my L35 crank with the new one.

They may not be that much of a big deal for most, but our only options are treating a stock cast crank and $3k billet crank.

Re: Rolled fillet crank. Anyone found one yet?

I talked with an veteran buick syty guy about this..........he has looked for years for a rolled fillet 4.3 crank. He has never found one, but says the mercruiser crank is a very strong crank. And has never found proof of a rolled filet crank for the 4.3, So is it myth or real ?

So the point of it is to get the weight closer to center, thus reducing chance of stress cracking. changing the L shape to a D shape.Probily helps the over all balance as well.
