RIP Typhoon engine, 1992 - 2007

My day:

The Typhoon I bought 5 months ago threw a rod today, at 125k. I coasted to a light and noticed a helicopter noise over the radio. I turned the radio off, listened, and pulled the hell over right away. The new belt tensioner I'd just installed was shaking back and forth, and I was only 1/4 of a mile from the NAPA where I bought it. I pulled in there, and they agreed it looked like a bad tensioner since nothing else was shaking. Swapped in a new one in the parking lot, started it, and the same damned thing happened. Headed to an engine shop, and at each red light (of which I hit every damned one), I had a little more difficulty coming up to speed. Finally, 4 blocks from the engine shop, the engine quits and I coasted to a quiet "Check Engine" halt in the middle of the road.

Fortunately I didn't punch a hole through the block, so the core is still salvagable. But needless to say, it was a long and depressing day.

What are my engine options? Worst-case, I figurte I could get a rebuilt Jasper engine that was cammed up a bit. Aside from that, any recommendations for good performance options, or good rebuilders in Colorado?

To be honest, I thought my transmission (which is on death's doorstep) would fail long before my engine, which still seemed to be running strong. So I haven't done much investigation into performance rebuilds, and now I'm without my daily driver until I figure things out.

Plan on spending some money on the engine... for sure...

Are you going to do the work your self? If not Plan on spending ALOT more

Just built my wifes engine just parts and machiene work was in the 5000.00 range.

Basic rebuild would be cheaper.. Might as well have the trans built now too!

Aren't Typhoons fun :)

Sorry about your bad day.. hopefully it'll be woth it once the truck's back up and running~

Good luck,Scott~

Spent a lot of time researching build options.

Finally decided to ship the whole car off to Waller Performance for engine and transmission rebuilds, new heads, etc. Will post a full report when I get it back!
