Removing Turbo

Okay, it is 2:35am, I am tired, I did not find anything on this....

I have tried like hell to figure out a way to get the (2) bolts of the turbo exhaust housing off (to the rear, downpipe side near o2 sensor). It is not working. I can't get to them and my tool selection is limited. I managed to get the turbine side off but the housing is fighting me.

Does anyone have a trick they can share? I have the fender well off, the tire is off, and it is on jack stands. I have coated them numerous times with Liquid Wrench also.

I am frustrated to no end.

Thanks.

Re: Removing Turbo

It is a pain. I had to grind the back of one of my wrenches for clearance and i removed the upper schroud and fan. it helped me alot.

Re: Removing Turbo

I took off the center section of the turbo. just undo the v-band clamp between the exhaust housing and the center section, disconnect the water and oil lines, pop the wastegate rod off and yank that bitch off. then the bolts are a breeze.

I did all of that already. The housing with the (2) rear bolts is all that remains. I ordered a set of metric "crow's foot" wrenches so MAYBE I can get enough grip on it to pop it loose.

I remember when I changed the first turbo in my truck I used crows feet and they helped a lot.

Good luck,
Nick

Before using the new sockets just torch them to
temp then try again just be carefull and have a bucket
water close by for fire . ;)

Re: Removing Turbo

Yea, I had this problem not too long ago. I build complete engine, And forget part on that side. Had to dissasemble. What I used was "stubby" open ends. I also have a small piece of square tubing about 6 inch long to use as a leverage bar when there is a problem.

Also heating the head of the thing with a small propane torch or MAPP, what ever is easiest.

Re: Removing Turbo

I used a stubby wrench. No easy way to do it though, just takes patience, a lot of PB and or an oxy/acel torch.

Re: Removing Turbo

I wish I did have a better way to heat it. The only thing I have is a small plumbers torch, which might work. I need to wait for all of the liquid wrench to dry up so I don't catch the TY on fire. I am so frustrated with it now, though, so that might be a good thing....

I managed to get the rear/bottom bolt off. Unfortunately the stud (on the exhaust manifold) came out with it. The bolt is seized on the stud. I am soaking it in liquid wrench, but is there a place to get a new stud or does someone have a couple good ones laying around? I am expecting the rear/top one to be even harder to get off. It is the original turbo and the truck has 102k miles so there is quite a bit of rust.

I am trying to get the downpipe loose so I can turn it to get the turbo off the housing but, of course, it is seized on the cat, as well. Maybe now is a good time to get a 3" downpipe and just cut the other one off.

Thanks for the help.
