just wondering if anyone has ever removed their tailgate and put on one of those pro-nets...i know it would look like ass but would be an easy way to lose 30 lbs to go to the track

they're easy enough to take off... why not just dump it right before going to the track?

They don't care if you have a tailgate at any track I've been to. Personally I think your wasting your time, but you could try back to back runs to see if it's worth anything.

You guys ever see that Mythbuster's episode where they compare 2 trucks mpg and the one with the gate up went like 30 miles farther then the one down. I creates more drag on the truck to have it down, but I don't know if that drag will counteract the weight savings.

It does create more drag if you don't have a tonneau. I'm not sure what it does if you do have a covered bed.

I wanted them to test if a tonneau cover would improve mileage, but they never responded to my email :(

I gained 2 tenths at Englishtown during the GMHTP shootout when my gate flew open on launch. :lol:

Re: remove tailgate?

They just did a revisited episode with the gas mileage thing again, results;

Mesh fabric gate=best economy
Tailgate up, tonneau, no tailgate= all the same
Tailgate down was the worst

Did they explain why the mesh worked the best?

Yea, that doesn't seem clear to me. I would think mesh would be worse than an open gate/no gate.

Not hugely familiar with this stuff, but it would seem that having the mesh gate will allow enough resistance to create the "smooth" bubble effect in the back, but without the drag against the full blown gate. :2cents:

That's what I was thinking. Less weight, too.

As far as the gate at the track goes... there was a SY at NATS this year that didn't even have a bed :tup: Take it off when you get there or before you leave home, all you need to drive on the street is fenders, bumper and tailights.
