Remote oil filter flow problem...Help!!

I just rebuilt the engine in my ty and am having some problems with oil flow. I have the stock remote oil filter setup.

The engine is building so much pressure it is blowing the gasket off of the oil filter. The oil pressure gauge will peg out. It would seem the I have a blockage somewhere. I disconnected the oil lines at the filter. I have no problem with flow through the cooler. I cranked the engine over with the line disconnected and oil is getting pumped to the filter fine.

My thought would be that the return (out) line to the engine is blocked. I tried to force air through it and it blew oil out through the (in) line from the engine. This does not make sense to me.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Does someone have a schematic that shows how the oil flows through the engine? There was a gasket I installed where the remote lines attach to the block, is it possible I installed it incorrectly?

Thanks to any help in advance!!

sounds like you may have misinstalled the gasket inside the adaptor block on the engine. either that or an alum line might have gotten kinked during the install.

Depending on how catastrophic the engine failure was, you might have a clogged oil cooler in the radiator side tank.

Thanks for the replies. The radiator is new and I have checked the flow, it is fine.

I have checked both hoses to the block and they are fine. The gasket was installed correctly.

I have flow through the entire remote filter and cooling system, so that means the blockage is somewhere in the block?!?!

With the adapter at the block installed I am able to push air through the return line to the engine, however, it will not push oil through the return line into the engine.

Does anyone have any clue as to what is going on with this thing? Does anyone know the flow pattern of the oil through the engine?

Thanks!!

if I remember right the oil goes to the cam and lifters first and then to the crank last(#1 rod being very last)... it goes around the dist to feed the oil gallies that supply the cam and lifters. pull the dist and feed oil in the block and see if you can see the oil coming around the dist socket.

Its more possible to have a problem with the oil pumps relief valve and the pump it self builds that kind of pressure.
Do what John said . Prime the motor and see how the oil comes from the little hole

Where is the oil pressure relief valve? Is a part of the oil pump or somewhere else. I am going to take a look at it this weekend. Thanks for all the help

Re: Remote oil filter flow problem...Help!!

Cranking the engine with the dist removed won’t make any oil pressure (the dist turns the oil pump). Oil pressure at the engine would indicate to me that the external oil system, filter, cooler, ect, is working/not plugged. Based on what you’re describing the oil pump relief valve is not working for some reason. That valve is located in the base of the oil pump. It’s a simple spring loaded piston that lets excess oil back into the pan. Did you work on the oil pump at all? The pan has to come off to get to oil pump.

Don is right, youre in deep sh*t :)
Try to prime the engine (with the dist off) with a drill and see how difficult the pump turns
What youre facing is so rare man

I finally got the engine pulled back out of the truck. The verdict was a defective oil pump. Thanks for all the help!!!!
