rebuiding turbo

Ok so im sure that this has happened to someone else and yes i did a search but didnt really see anything on it. i bought a rebuild kit off ebay and got everything torn down and cleaned up. started putting it all back together and at the end when i was putting the compressor wheel back on, i was tightening it down. the whole thing just seized up like it had too much tension on it. the wheels wouldnt turn for nothing. so i tore it down again and reinspected it to make sure it was all put together correctly. it was. i am stumped here. not sure how to overcome this. i thought it was supposed to turn freely as it is just the cartridge and not installed into the housings. i can post up some pics if needed and can tear down and take pics that way too if needed. i am in no hurry as this was a spare turbo that i had and thought i would try to rebuild it to have something to do.

Re: rebuiding turbo

Same compressor wheel as was pulled off it? Did you ensure the thrust seat/collar thingy was all the way in and the smaller snap ring was fully seated?

Likely to culprit: did you use a rebuild kit for a super back wheel and yours is not a super back?

Re: rebuiding turbo

yeah i ran the turbine wheel all the way in and felt it snap in. the rebuild kit was for a flat back and the compressor wheel was the same from the turbo. its just weird. it spun freely before i took it apart and now it binds up tight. guess i will take it apart again and look at it closer tomorrow evening. and like i said i can provide some pics later when i take it apart.

Re: rebuiding turbo

Make sure the snap ring is fully seated. It can be a bitch to get that piece all the way down, the new orings make it very tight. I use a manual arbor press with very even pressure to ensure it's all the way in.
