Rear View Mirror Map Lights ?

I remember on my 93 S10 the map lights would stay on for about 20 seconds after you closed the door to the vehicle. They would also work without the ignition turned on. On my syclone they only work if the ignition is turned on. Is this the way it is supposed to be??

Thats the way they work on my 91 blazer and my typhoon.

I have a Sy and a 91 sonoma and they both are the same. No workie unless the key is on and thats the only time.
