Rear suspension

Since the beginning I knew the rides in these trucks were not the best but I would like to know just out of curiosity if anyone else is experiencing the same issue. I have installed rear bell-tech springs with NO lowering blocks, rear sway-bar and new rear Monroe max shocks. I probably should have installed the Bilsteins like i did in the front but at the time these were the ones i went with and i don't recall why.

Keep in mind i did all this about 5 years ago.

The issue is the BANG i get from the rear when i hit a bump in the road. I can go over a speed bump at a good speed lets say 40 and the truck has its movement smooth up and down but its the BANG i get when its that type of bump that is on the roads that feels like i'm going to lose something on the dam truck.

Wondering if others that have the same setup have the same issue.

Thanks

Re: Rear suspension

Did you install set-back plates to center the rear diff? If not, it could be the driveshaft hitting the transfer case output

Re: Rear suspension

I suspect you are hitting the bump stops partly due to the shocks not able to control the motion quick enough.

Just fixed basically the same issue on the Shoptruck,.. Have a bell-tech rear sway-bar and the bolts that go into the frame got loose and allowed the bar to move up/down with the slop in that mounting hole. Just get under it and yank up/down on the bar at the ends and you'll know if its that.

Re: Rear suspension

I would go with, hitting bump stops, shocks are bottoming out, sway bar is hitting or loose.

If its been doing this for sometime get underneath the truck and check for wear marks. Check the bump stops and u bolts, frame, sway bar for shiny metal or rubbed looking parts.

If you can't find anything like that I would look into the shocks. With lowering springs shorter shocks are required. If using blocks it lowers the truck but does not change where the shocks are because of the location of the lower mount. When using lowering springs the lower shock mount is essentially raised requiring a little bit shorter shock.

My guess is you will find some rub or wear marks telling you what is making the noise, the next step is to find the solution to get rid of it!

Good luck :D

No i did not because there was no need for it. My rear tires are in center perfectly.

I have a feeling the shocks are not the best so its on my list that i might change.

I actually had the same issue a few years ago. After the third time it got lose I ended up using locktite nuts and used the impact to tighten them down. Still tight as of last night when i checked.

i actually did look for marks and what i saw was the exhaust causing the issue. I ended up moving the exhaust a bit to give me more clearance over the rear end but I think there is more to it than just the exhaust. The marks on the exhaust are still there so not sure if its fresh marks or from the last time. I will add some grease to the marks and see if it still hits. I still think my rear shocks are not the best for my setup.

Thanks everyone for the great tips!!

Re: Rear suspension

Can you elaborate a bit more on your comment? I used the ones everyone recommended and they fit perfectly. Thanks

No, they are too long , I posted this up last year sometimes also. Look at your rear shackle and the angle with it and how close to the frame. Use bell tech leafs from a Colorado/Canyon they are correct for these trucks. They will also center the diff in the wheel housing.

I can't remember the #. I know my cousins kid is into the low rider stuff and has a canyon with bell tech springs. So we installed them onto the typhoon ( when I had it) and they fit, diff was centered also. No lowering blocks or relocation blocks. Kind of thought it was funny that they worked out. I want to say they were 50 inches long, this was last year when we tied this out as I wasn't really Impressed with the belltechs on the ty.

The 5953 for a canyon/colorado comes up as 52 inches which is suppose to be the same length as the typhoon. The other part numbers people use are 55 inches.

That would sound better then. I know it was 50 something.
