My Sonoma GT has a line-loc and had done many,many burnouts. Slowly (6 Mo.-1yr)my posi started fading, and now performs as a open diff (one wheel spinning). I read that these trucks came with 3.42 pos units by Auburn. I puled the cover today expecting to find broken parts or at least very worn clutches. Well, I did not recognize what I saw. I mean there were no signs of anything wrong, but it is not a posi! I mean it does not resemble anyhing that I have seen as far as posi units go. So I did a google search on GM posi and did not see what I was looking at under my truck. So I kept doing image searches until I came across the GM Gov-lock unit, and bingo! So this is my question, did all SGT's come with the Gov-lock, or has mine been molested sometime in the past? Also, what would cause failure in a Gov-lock with no broken pieces? I was hoping to drain the old oil, replace with new, add new posi additive and hope they were just underlubed. But now what, new unit?

Double-check your codes in the glove-box, the gov-loc is G80. I had the Gov-loc in my '92 C1500. Didn't know any better when putting new fluid in, and apparently those units DON'T like posi additive. Check around to make sure, but I'm pretty sure just straight gear lube for it. I ended up creating a nightmare with my Gov-loc, so I upgraded to a Detroit Tru-trac in my truck. Very happy with it!

Yeah, learned the hard and expensive way that an "L" on the ring gear bolts means left-hand thread. Duh! Busted the head off each one with the impact wrench before I realized something wasn't quite right....... New ring & pinion, new Tru-trac, bearings and everything. Whoops.:roll:
