Rear Disc Conversion?

Bump Stick

Get me the BIG hammer
Ok I have searched and read about rear disc conversions. What is everyones opinion on them? I know there are less parts to them then a drum set up (KISS... Keep it simple stupid) And I have heard that the drums will hold better for boost launches. Well this truck is my daily. So I am concerned most with on road performance not drag launches.

What are my choices out there for conversions? and does anyone have any hard numbers of those different conversions either?

Disk brakes rock.
Easy to work on.
Looks cool, cools off quicker and stays cooler after abuse.
Helps keep the axle from separating from the vehicle.
They work just as good at boost launching.
LS1 upgrade is the cheapest and also the KISS route.

Re: Rear Disc Conversion?

well KISS is what I know LOL. I'm in the army and these guys abuse there vehicles. Alot of my fixes are not from the repair manual LOL. I got to stict to that method cause some of these cuse can mess up a wet dream LOL.

On my jeep i hated the drums on the Dana 44 cause they were always ****ign upi.. i bought all new EVERYTHING, and istalled 100% to the manual... and they ****ed up over and over. So I went with a Ford Explorer disc conversion and damn what do you know less parts and no problems. And yep keeps the wheel on when you break and axle shaft (in offroading i never had the money for full floaters).

Is there a kit to bolt on the LS1s? I dont want to have to fabricate any brackets or anything. I would like to keep my parking break but honestly I dotn need it.

Re: Rear Disc Conversion?

i have a pair of ls1 backing plates sitting from a project i was planning on doing but scrapped. you would still need to get the rotors and calipers, but if you would like them, pm me and i can send you some pictures.

Rear brakes are bolt on from a LS1 Firebird/Camaro.
Lots of cutting.
Axles need removed and re-installed with new backing plates.
Brakes are swapped sides to clear bump stops.
Syclones require a hole to be drilled.

Ask me about emer brake kits from HotRodV6.

Re: Rear Disc Conversion?

I purchased my needed hardware off a 02 v8 camaro . I didnt drill the extra hole but did have to modify the ls1 backing plate .
This is the dry fit before modifying anything .

This is where I needed to remove to get them to sit flush .

After the grinder was put down .

Besides that , it was a bolt-in affair on my sy . I think everything was 150 from the salvage yard except for the $100 cross drilled rotors . The calipers and parts had 50k on them and I used the stock ls1 rubber brake hose connected to the stock syty hard line .

Its that easy . Just a little messy .A solution is on the way using the stock syty ebrake cable but its not 100% yet . Soon though . Enjoy .

Re: Rear Disc Conversion?

This post just made up my mind, I'm definately doing this conversion at some point. I didn't realize there was so little involved. Thanks for the post and fantastic pictures!

Re: Rear Disc Conversion?

where that big hole is on the backing mount, i cut straight across. no grinding on the ls1 backing plates.

Re: Rear Disc Conversion?

Personally I am not all that convinced I can take full advantage of the extra braking of rear disc brakes in my Syclone.

Jeremy average about 2 feet less with LS1 rear discs. I am all for better brakes over the stock crap, but I would do the ABS delete and 12" front brakes first.

Re: Rear Disc Conversion?

you couldn't pay me to remove the abs.

properly working abs + ls1 rear disc, + 12 ls1 camaro front disc = extremely short stopping distances.

My ABS doesn't work and one of my friend Ty lost his brakes and rear end another car when one of the o-ring seals in the blew.

Re: Rear Disc Conversion?

bad working ABS is a killer on the road, mine acted up without giving a code, try to brake at 120mph on dry pavement, when the ABS thinks it needs to act while it doesn't need to....

Re: Rear Disc Conversion?

I almost cut the axle flange , but i decided Id rather not do unreversable mods if they could be avoided .
For the abs , I really just didnt know if hydroboost + Ls1 front/rear even work with abs so it all came off .
As long as people dont spend 850 on some internet bought kit , yeah theres a couple different options people can choose from .

i don't see cutrting it iff as an unreversable mod, i mean its just a s10 rear end
