Rear Diff Rebuild

Got a quote today from one of the local rear end shops for a rebuild on the Sy. He qouted me $650, does this sounds right? There isnt any SYTY specific gears in there, is there. I was under the impression this was for seals and bearing only? That seems like a rip for seals and bearings only?

Re: Rear Diff Rebuild

What's wrong with yours now?

If it's just a leaky pinion seal. Just replace the seal!
Change the fluid and be done with it.
I just changed the fluid in the Typhoon with just over 100K on it and the gears/bearings ect looked great!

What's all involved for 650?

Re: Rear Diff Rebuild

Good question, I am restoring a 140K mile truck. The rear diif hasnt had anything replaced and I am powder coating the diff housing. So in order for the powder coater to paint it. Iit needs to be all taken apart. So I figured what hell I'll get it replaced now instead of later. But when he said 650 bills it made me wonder a bit? That seems pretty steep.

Stab it and steer it
Re: Rear Diff Rebuild

If that includes a ring, pinion, new bearings, seals and setup then it may not be far off. You need to know what it includes.

You said "one of the local ear end shops." I'd also talk to one or two others. Got any off road 4 wheeler friends? Check with them, they're always ripping up rear ends.

I called another shop and he qouted me about 500 off the phone.. So I may not be too off with 650. I need to check and see what 650 is including.

Re: Rear Diff Rebuild

You may just want to have it blasted and then put down epoxy and POR15. You'd have great protection and it'd look just as nice. Or just Base coat clear coat the entire thing.
You would not have to take it apart for that. I'd replace the pinion seal and change the fluid once that is all done but unless it's been run low for a long time I'd bet it's in good shape.
If your powder coating you'd need it all apart and all the seals replaced. You can inspect the bearings and gears. If they are ok, I'd put it back together the way it was. Keep all the shims or spacers right where they were!

Re: Rear Diff Rebuild

I agree with Scott.. Especially if this is a stock 7.5" rear.. Its just not worth putting all that money, time, and effort in to...

Re: Rear Diff Rebuild

The powder coater guy is charging me 150 bucks to paint a bunch of parts. So I figured I throw in the diff also. With the truck having a ton of miles I figured i get the diff rebuilt before I punish it too. So all in all I am not out to much money just some time.

on the $650

For $300 more you could get a Currie rear end.

axle builder
Re: Rear Diff Rebuild

A rebuild kit for that rear end is about $100, plus $20 for axle bearings and seals. That is every bearing, seal, shim and small part needed to do the whole rear end. Labor shouldn't be more than about $250. $650 seems like a lot for that job.

The Eaton posi would be a good upgrade from the Governor Lock that was used in these trucks. Moser axles would also be a good upgrade. These trucks already have the 28 spline axles. A complete 8.5 or 12 bolt would be better if you have the extra money. Moser offers a powder coating service on their new rear ends now.

Really how much would a complete 8.5 or 12 bolt cost and who sells them? Thanks for the heads up on the rebuild kit. I knew that !@#$%^ was trying to hussle me.

Re: Rear Diff Rebuild

I think I paid $300 to have mine done with new seals, bearings and have the axles checked out ... they reused the pinion / ring and installed a new diff I supplied... and about the same for the front diff
