rear diff posi

I noticed that my rear locker only locks when it wants to and when it dose one tire has to be moving at least 5mph. I tried cleaning it with no change. I have a posi i pulled out of a buddys f-body i was thinking about slapping it in there. I just wanted to know if any one has put a posi in theres and did it make parking lot manuvers worse. it is already bad enough with the viscus clutch slowing ya down, didnt know how a posi would add to that?

we have a gov-lock.
it's a stunning piece of shit, and indeed, by design, needs an actual difference in wheel speed to work as it uses centrifugal force to actuate.
anyway, a real posi will make no fifference in p'lot maneuvers or anything else - go ahead and do it.
if its a torsen out of a 98up fbody, all the better.
earlier oem units were auburn non rebuildable style, and not great.

So just what will bolt up to a Typhoon rear? Is there a list anywhere of what work? (eg plug and play)

I was under the truck last night after wrestling with a frozen Mcgard lock. When I jacked up the rear and rotated the tires, they spun in the opposite direction (Indicating an "open" rear) I thought these Mo Fo's had posi's in them !

What a disappointment :(

The tires spinning opposite direction test is not 100% accurate BTW.

All syty's do have posi's.

they are a form of a locker, and will act like an open diff with that test but their is a locker in there.

Ditto on what he said... If you swap out your stocker with any other diff you should have the back lash and pinion depth reset also.

Errrrrrrrr.. I have to disagree partially with this comment. I installed an EATON posi in my truck after finding out the GOV LOCK exploded. I didnt have to re-set the pinion depth, just the backlash. I think the only time you'd have to sweat the pinion depth is if you changed Ring & Pinions...

Just my $.02 worth.....

Id agree for 99.9% of the ppl out there but....I usually look posts as if I was doing the mod in question. Knowing my luck (or lack there of) if I didnt check the pinion depth the rear diff would burst into flames before I got to the end of the driveway.

On a more serious note... More than likely there wont be an issue with pinion depth but if the carrier is machined a little different than the one that came out, new/used bearings are being installed, whatever there may be some tweaking to do to the depth. Then again maybe not but Id prolly check just to be safe.

Didnt that happen at GB '01 ? Sounds like we have similar luck with automotive projects... The next dude could run it with it out for years, prolly get by with it, I run it if it was out and it wouldnt make it far...

I am not saying DONT check it, I do agree with you there, chances are that it wont need to be changed. Definitely do the pattern check how they show ya in the manual. I was most scared I was going to have to do that on my truck, and as it turned out, I didnt have to. The time you DONT check it, it will certainly be out.

Guys,

Do the SyTy's have a "clutch" type of Posi like the GN's have ? I just ordered new clutches for my GN Posi from Dal for ~ $75.

yes we do. but the whole thing is a waste of $... it's designed to unlock above 35mph. and it's weak and the clutchs cant even hold up to a stock syty. go with a real locker like detroit or auburn or the 100's of others..
