Fairly long but....

A year ago, Dec '13, I posted this. It was an 11 sec run. I was bit surprised but happy. Got some well appreciated compliments.

Regardless, I had always thought that that run was bit of a fluke.

Brief history. All last year I was having trouble pinpointing reason(s) for the truck just not performing at the track. Fine on the street but full throttle - full load at the far end not so much. Worked with Eric, changed ign modules, two ign wire changes. All for naught.

After the first track day of the year a few weeks ago still no difference. Couldn't hardly get the truck to run in the upper 12's. Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago. Order and install some actual "race" plug wires. I notices the difference immediately. Could not wait to get to the track today.

Here's the first slip of the day:

11%20sec%20time%20slip.jpg

Every other slip (5 of them, 6 total) are also a 11 sec slips. The best run was the first above. The worst was 11.902 elimination run. Also the last run of the day.

Right now I can't post the DMs. I will get to that. But all were very close to 19# of boost on 91 pump gas. Spraying meth. Believe it or not the worst knock retard was on the slip above. As I pulled spark and adjusted fuel the truck slowed. I don't think it was false knock because I could see the retard go away to virtually 0 as I changed things.

I was thinking that I could dump in some race gas add a tad of spark and break 11.5.:rotf:

Anyway a fun and very gratifying day. Went three rounds, loosing the third, on a weekend race. Very cool. Much more competitive here on the weekends. Truck is consistent now where it wasn't anything close last year. A little more work and it'll be a real bracket truck.

I wish to publicly thank Eric at TurboTweak for his help last year. I suspect I tried his patience a bit.

Very cool.

Curious. What make of wires did you get rid of? Probably the same make I ditch to get trucks to pass smog with no other changes.

Over the counter auto parts wires, don't remember the brand. Earlier last year I tried Delphi. No good either. I had had Taylors for awhile before all this. They acquired a miss under anything beyond half throttle. I can't help but think that our engines (or most any turbo engine) just don't like "regular" wires. I had them separated and isolated, no help. I have the new set routed slightly different then before. Only in retrospect do I now know it was the wires.

You might be interested in the plugs I run. Autolite 103 at .030 However now that the thing is running correctly I'm gonna have to pull them and see if the heat-range is correct.

I actually spent considerable time researching wires. There is a lot of info on this site.

Did you buy a universal set and put the wires together yourself or was it a custom set of wires? Would you have a part number handy? Congrats on the great progress and thanks for sharing, Mr. Don.

Nice pass Don, clean truck. What psi are you leaving the line?

According to their catalog they have sets available in 7,8,8.5 mm for our vehicles listed, part # is magnecor 6543 for the KV85 8.5mm race wires, list price says $120, a quick google search resulted for roughly $85, I didn't see a result in their catalog for the 10mm.

I purchased set 6743 and added a high temp boot for #6 (free). Purchased straight from Magnecor. $70 plus shipping, arrived in about 3 days. Besides the added expense I wasn't sure I could get 8mm wires on the dist. Things are pretty snug there as it is with the 7mm.

A correct # 6 is a roughly 45* boot. You could get by with a straight boot there. I'm short of space there because of the JSM 3" DP so I have a high temp cover on it. The other issue is getting 2 & 4 past the DP. I have a boot on the pair and actually run them between the dipstick tube and the head. Truck is here, I'll get some pics. Much easier than explaining...

Side note trivia: Lots of folks like the wires separated and parallel. Looks purdy but you actually want them to cross occasionally. When parallel the chance of a crossfire is greater.

I've been using the 10mm Magnecor wires in my Sy since I got it. Only reason I went with them was because that's what I always used on my Buick back in the day and had great luck with them.

They're PN 6943.

Big time congrats, not many truck get in 11's in the scheme of things.

What turbo are you running if you have my DP on it? 20g or a hybrid. If Stock turbo then I will have to fly out personally and congrat you.

Looking at my DMs it looks like 4.5 to 5.5, 2 step set to 2500. I may experiment leaving with more RPM, increasing it maybe 100 RPM at a time. I'm very close to spinning the tires right now. 32-3300 rpm converter if I do a power brake stall.

Hybrid. 60-1 compressor. 14cm housing, 11 blade wheel. Some pics:

Don, if you don't mind telling, what total timing were you running on your best run before you backed it down?

20* before it started pulling advance. This is not necessarily a good number because I was making very small adjustments to fueling also. Still working on getting the DMs up.

Its good to see you figured out your problem and resolved it. I bet it feels good.

Your truck launches smoother than mine does. Do you have front end limiters? Any other suspension mods?

The only suspension mods are those traction bars that were sold awhile back called Battle Bars. Good shocks, nothing else.

The track helps. They prep well on weekends. I tried a couple these launches on the street and it went sideways.
