Re-installing power steering pulley

Is there any tricks or special way to do this? I removed it a few weeks back to enable me to completely delete the ac bracket but it was real bitch to get off even after I finally was able to get my hands on the correct removal tool.. From what it looks like I could just put a block of wood on it and hammer it one little by little with a rubber mallet but was wondering if there was an easier way or if that might damage the pump? I have the rad and fmic out still so I have plenty of room to swing away :)

thanks in advance

Throw it into the stove for about 20 min. @ 300 deg. Then run like hell to the truck and slide it on.
Kind of like installing the lower timing chain gear.

Re: Re-installing power steering pulley

if it works on the exhaust manifolds I bet it would work on this... If ya really want to go crazy with the dynamics of hot and cold put some ice on the power steering pump shaft.

Let us know how well it works!

I used that method with my March aluminum pulley which allowed me to get it on about 3/4's of the way on. Problem is that the aluminum cools to fast. So I had to use a dead-blow mallet the rest of the way.

I think im going to search the kit I have to see if I have the actual tool and see how hard it is to get on.. if I don't have it or it's still a bitch then it's going into the oven :)

Re: Re-installing power steering pulley

I rented the remover and installer from autozone, it was in one kit.

The installer is just a long bolt, a nut and a washer.

Re: Re-installing power steering pulley

I rented an installer fom autozone. The tool was screwed up and it took me an hour to put the pulley back on. Next time I'm buying my own.

Re: Re-installing power steering pulley

I don't have the tool.. and don't have an autozone near by.. have pepboys and napa but neither wouldn't lend the tool out because they didn't have it... after two hours of using a torch and some muscle and alot of nerves I got it back on.

Thanks for all the help guys

Re: Re-installing power steering pulley

The installation tool is literally just a bolt washer and a nut.

You thread the bolt into the shaft of the ps pump until it bottoms out.
Then you turn the nut down against the pulley so that it is sandwiching the pulley between the shaft and the head of the bolt.
simple push on type tool.

One of my PS pumps came with it.
At first I thought it was a mistake and I was gonna throw it out.
Then my pal showed me how it works. doh..

I used the dead blow hammer method one time and it ruined the seal around the PS pump shaft and i was replacing it again 2 days later... the right way.

hopefully he didnt get happy with that torch and use to much heat or he might be doing the same.. direct heat or open flame around seals generally cause leaks.

Shit... I'll have to go take a look at it later today to see if it's now leaking from the shaft seal :(

X2. I agree with Jason 100%. NEVER use a hammer or rubber mallet. Go buy you a pwr str pump, it comes with it, well...usually. If youdont need the pump return it.
