re-doing a wheel cap

So I got a wheel cap cause my truck was missing one. But the lettering is silver instead of red, and there is a small blemish in the clear coat.

Does anyone have any good procedures to remove the clear coat entirely so I can just paint the GMC red and then do my own clear coat? Any ideas would help!

Re: re-doing a wheel cap

I have a set I am about to start on myself, also with silver lettering and some problems with blemishes. I was warned that the blemishes probably won't come out. Basically just soak the cap in stripper over night and it should come off pretty easy. Then you can paint your letters red. I was advised to use the self leveling clear.

I'm sure others probably have plenty of experience with this. I'll be doing mine this week if you want to wait to see how mine turn out.

thread jack:

wow man just clicked your link, your truck is beautiful. what a score a super low mileage truck in seemingly mint shape.

did it have to have a repaint after returing from saudi? from what i've heard the sun just killed paint on the trucks that never sold.

Best stuff to get the clear off is called "Aircraft Stripper" its around $35 for the can.

Use gloves because it will burn. Use a brush and put a coat on, let it sit for about 30-40 min's and wash it off with water, it might take two tries to get all of the clear off.

I don't have a before pic, but they were bad. This is an after with two good coats on it.

Re: re-doing a wheel cap

I ended up finding a spray Aircraft Remover in my garage, worked awesome!

Yeah I had a blemish on my cap and I was hoping it would buff out, but it's still there a little bit. Not too noticeable and I'm sure it'll be even less noticeable once I re-clear coat it :D
