Random Stalling

Hello everyone.
I have an issue with a random stalling with my truck. It will be idling fine than all of a sudden just shut off. I have power as of lights, gauges and radio so its not electrical and I have fuel on the fuel rail at 38-40 psi with no drop. Got lucky it did it twice when I was checking everything out under the hood and saw the fuel gauge on the rail not drop. Turn the key and starts right back up. Before it stalls it stumbles for about 3-5 seconds before shutting off. Check engine light came on and the code is 44. This code states check ECM is plugged in firmly, TBI gasket or O2 sensor. Can an O2 sensor cause this or maybe something to do with the coil.

Anyway before I start going nuts hopefully get some feedback.

Thanks guys!!

Re: Random Stalling

I was thinking that as well. Might just go ahead and replace it as it doesn't look in that great of condition when I started Troubleshooting and took off the cap and rotor.

Re: Random Stalling

Go to any local parts store...they can test them with a ignition module tester. It's free....but it can't duplicate heat....thats always a factor.

Re: Random Stalling

I once had one of the wires that run between the ignition module and the coil going open. And it was under the insulation on the wire. Most the time it would run great, then just die while driving along. Took me a while to find that problem.

Re: Random Stalling

Went ahead and ordered a new ignition control module. Should get it in a few days. Hopefully that resolves this issue.

Re: Random Stalling

I have also had the coil. Have these same issues. But it will not cut off until you reach operating temperature. It will cool down in seconds and start again. So it he ignition coil doesn't cure your issue. It may be worth a look.

Re: Random Stalling

Okay guys well yesterday I started in a happy mood after replacing the ignition control module the truck ran great with no issues. Had it idle for almost an hour and went for an hour drive with no issues. I even went for a drive at night and it ran great until almost home at a light it shut off. It started right up and rode just as good. I looked at the fuel rail gauge and I have 38psi when the truck shuts off so I don't think it's fuel. What else can be causing this. Any other sensors or modules that can be the cause. Thanks.

Re: Random Stalling

This exact same issue used to happen to me before my large rebuild. After the rebuild it no longer did it and the only thing I changed out for the ignition system at the time was the distributor. When I inspected the old dizzy I saw that it was aged and a little rusty under the rotor. Check yours out see if you maybe experiencing something similar.

Re: Random Stalling

If it stumbles just before it stalls, it may be fuel delivery. However, if you've ruled out fuel, then ignition. Could be a bad connection to the ecm or as previously mentioned, to the coil. You may want to check the distributor ignition pickup. I had a similar problem which turned out to be the pickup. Mine was shutting off with no warning. The tach would drop and I'd get the check engine light.

Re: Random Stalling

What exactly is the distributor ignition pickup and where is it? As for the fuel when it stalls I still have pressure at the fuel rail that's why I'm thinking not a fuel issue. As for the ecm I took it down years ago to install chip and haven't touch it since. The thing is it starts right up within seconds after it stalls. Like a sensor or relay trips.

Re: Random Stalling

I think eggr is referring to the ignition control module (ICM). It's inside the distributor.

Re: Random Stalling

The pick up is under the rotor in the distributor. It is the connector you plugged into the two prongs sticking out of the ignition module.

Re: Random Stalling

You can get it tested at just about every parts store...the only thing it can't duplicate is heat from the engine....most fail underneath heat from getting hot.

Re: Random Stalling

An update as of 6/16/2017....

First off thanks for the feedback much appreciated. Yesterday after a quick drive it stalled once and when it started to stumble before it shut off I noticed the RPM gauge did not drop so i thinking it might not be the pickup in distributor. As of the coil i have an MSD and with all the negative comments I'm thinking that might be the next thing to change. Please continue to give me some ideas as i really want this to be resolved.

thanks

Re: Random Stalling

Just get an ACDELCO coil. In fact, ACDELCO everything electrical under the hood saves you tons of problems.

Re: Random Stalling

Just Installed ac/Delco coil, cap and rotor. Even though i know the cap and rotor wouldn't be the cause of the stalling it was time for a change anyway. It ran fine last night for the 30 minutes of driving. If any other ideas please pass them along. Will keep everyone updated in a few days.

Thanks

Re: Random Stalling

If it helps I have a similar issue. Though it runs great when driving, it idles rough and has started stalling randomly. Can't find any vacuum leaks. Did cap rotor wires plugs fuel filter, etc. I have been chasing this for a while and have had no luck whatsoever.

Re: Random Stalling

Did either of you replace the ICM? Or get it tested?

Re: Random Stalling

As of today drove it a while and it is running great. It must have been the coil. Anyway ac is on and im driving around as much as possible and so far so good.
